Whle in France this autumn, my Ford Auto trail Tribute 615 developed a wheel bearing problem and I had to have it replaced.
The van is only 10 years old and has only done 72,000 miles.
Does this sound very early to develop this sort of problem?
Anyone got experience of wheel bearing issues?

My car ones collapsed at 29.000 thu, simple as dealers never serviced or npticrd there was no cap on one side and almost dry on the other.

I had a wheel bearing fail around 77,000 miles on my Ducato.

My suspicion is that the problem is more an issue of the continual heavy running of a motorhome rather than inactivity.

72000 is a good innings for a wheel bearing ...

Mileage frankly means little compared to useage and weight carried etc .

Just a service item

My '05 plate Ducato ate a front wheel bearing after 30k miles, didn't fail completely, just got a bit rumbly. But it probably spent a good amount of its previous life parked up.
Just about to renew rear pads, park brake shoes & discs, as they look like they've never been done.

Parked up = BAD. The reason that the windmills turn slowly when there is no wind, is that they are electricllaly driven round to prevent the bearings digging dents in the outer rings.
Also, if we drive mostly in this country the nearside wheels will be thundering up and down in pot holes and drains more than the outside wheels. So their bearings will wear quicker.
No, 72k miles isn't bad. Nothing to complain about. On a Transit, that is. Look at the bearings on a pre-1990 Mercedes car (I don't know about the new ones) and you will see why they last 300,000 miles. And they use Special Green Mercedes Wheel Bearing Grease. I have no idea why the grease is green but it is special wheel bearing grease, not yer average Castrol LMP grease.
I had a BMW motorbike that needed new steering head bearings at 4000 miles. They were made in Bulgaria, even the brand new ones I got from the BMW dealer. So I chucked those in the bin and fitted SKF which lasted till I sold the bike a lot of miles later.

The later german skoda favorit rears used to fail all the time, vw decided to downsize from the big skoda ones which never gave trouble.

At one time Engineers had the say in what was needed. Now Accountants dominate and save pennies on the new build vehicle. The customer pays for their greed.

A wheel bearing on my new 1986 Ford Escort within failed in 6 month and 15K miles so they have improved somewhat.

Probably built at Halewood on Merseyside ...

They used to push the unpainted bodies out on the roof at close of shift on a Friday night

Homecar (lunar) 22.5 foot On 2007 Renault Master chassis
Rear wheel bearings both replaced at 30 000 miles. Just replaced nearside rear again at 50000 miles
