Hi campers,

Hi, you need a silicon or mastic flexible sealant, so it can expand with the heat and movement of van.

many on here have used sikaflex i believe ,and found it excellent .plus its not expensive..but i am shure there will be someone come on thats used it and can confirm it ,

hope this is of some help

I would suggest Sikaflex , if you google it I think I would use the sikaflex 512 which is made for caravans, not ordinary silicone sealant as used on sinks, you can buy it on line or at a caravan accessory shop.
I hope this is not to confusing but silicone will probably break down under the uv from sunlight.

Thanks all

Hi Leelinda,

I have had a look around and will try some silka thanks, should I dry the area with a hair dryer or spirit first?.

If there is any old mastic in the joint try and remove it you will get a better seal then, i made the mistake of going over old mastic and the water found it,s way in.

Sikaflex is brand name ,good product, as others have said do not use kitchen/bath sealant ( Dow Corning) as it will fail later on. You can use a low modulus neuteral silicone as used for UPVC windows as this is designed for continuous use in wet conditions . better still you can use Stelmax 1961 but be careful how you use it because if you get it on an area which is not needed there and it dries you will not get it off as it tends to etch itself on. Do not confuse mastic and silicone as mastic generally tends to be non setting

 If it's only a small amount you need, I can bring the Silkaflex that's in my applicator down to Hereford, as I fitted a solar panel last week and only used half a cartridge, saves you spending £12 only to use a smiggon. PM me if you want it and I'll go and Chuck it in the Van? :scooter::goodluck:

£12? how big is the cartridge, we pay around £2 for LM/n silicone sealant from Quay Plastics, a UPVC window suppliers.

Soudal fixall classic, cheaper than the Sika and remains a bit more flexible.Great stuff.Make sure the surfaces have been left long enough to dry after using your cleaning agent .

Peace of mind

:egg:Just the standard size, got it from my local MH centre, I could have got a cheaper sealant but this is the one recommended as it is an adhesive as well, didn't want to risk the solar panel blowing off on the motorway!! :scared: It's stuck like the proverbial £$%^ to a blanket?:lol-053::lol-053:

Sikkaflex or Soudal and £12 is an average price for either. Make sure they are in date and DO NOT use silicon sealant.

Many thanks

Hi Mykcamper,

Thanks for the offer, but I am a bit worried about it raining so I will do it today as will also need a big ladder to get to it.

Regards Snowbirds.

Try CT1, it's pretty damn good stuff......

CT1 Applications - CT1Ltd

I can vouch for CT1, very good at sealing, and can be applied when the surface is wet.
We have used it for sealing guttering, but it is expensive.

I used Sikaflex for fitting my solar panel, ensured the area was clear of old sealant, cleaned the area with a damp rag, dried it with a hair dryer and applied the sikaflex whilst the area was still warm.

+1 for CT1. But probably a little bit overkill for this instance

While I think Sikaflex 512 is fantastic for jobs where a strong and permanent bond is required, ie fitting solar panels, I wouldn't use it for a general sealing job. If you use it on a roof or window seal, you will never be able to remove that seal or window frame in future should maintenance be required. You will destroy the fitting in the process.

Use a non setting sealant for waterproofing seals, for example Seamseal.

Just IMHO

Cheers
