What is the difference between m/h st navs and car ones.

Hi I read a post about motorhome sat navs and wondered whats the difference betwwen those and my normal car one.

Essentially, as with any item that has the word 'motorhome' attached to it, it allows it to be sold for twice the price. Other than that, not much.

Think you can programming in the size of your van, but unless its a former bus, I've never really seen the point.
 
We've caravanned and motorhomed in the UK and France using a Garmin car sat nav with no problems for several years. But do remember they do need to be used with a modicum of common sense. Some folks opt for truck sat nave's, and they allow you to put in your vehicle dimensions, but most of us (I think) live quite happily the car type
 
I have a Noza Tec Truck and it works a treat :dance: our POI`s go on it fine no problem and it doubles up as a 7" reversing camera as well with having AV In.

Entered the dimensions of the van i.e. length, width, height, gross weight and axle weight and it`s kept us out of trouble both abroad and here in the UK.

Been using it in anger for over 12 months now and i can`t see the sense in spending the thick end of £300 on one of the big named ones.

The car based TomTom we had previously nearly :scared: got us in a right pickle a few times and it`s a blooming good job i was concentrating on the road and signs.

The key points are they allow you to set width and height as well as weight thus helping you avoid getting stuck. Not a big problem but it did help me avoid a width limited road at rush hour which could have been a bit of real bother. Mind you I use a cheap ebay truck version which cost less than a tom tom
 
It all depends on how confident you are driving a large vehicle. Most people are used to driving cars. Something a lot bigger can pose quite a challenge. Of course there are many members here who have been driving motorhomes and larger for years and take it all for granted.

For those less familiar, the 'Truck' and 'Campervan' editions of satnavs offer the option to avoid routes which have narrow lanes, low bridges, etc.
 
I have a Garmin 760 Camper Satnav, which I love to bits. I polish it, nurture it, talk lovingly to and tuck it under my pillow at night! But for some reason, it cannot get to grips with the fact that our Hymer has an overhead luton. After making the millionth mistake in France earlier this year, I vowed to try to get an external aerial.
I found and bought a re-attenuating aerial off ebay and I can honestly say it is brilliant! I have accuracy down to about 10 ft and while it cost around £40 to buy it means that I am now saying NICE things to my Satnav intead of finding new swear words every five minutes.
With a dedicated camper satnav, it is preloaded with campsites, fuel stations etc and it is possible to programme a trip on a computer and then transfer it into the Garmin, as well as being able to imput your vehicle dimensions, so that it (hopefully) doesn't lead you down some god forsaken country lane.
Have to go now, my Satnav is feeling neglected, and needs someone to talk to!

I bought one of the cheap truck ones off ebay, and its been great so far.

In fact at the weekend near Swansea it took me on a route which I initially ignored because it was an additional 5 miles, I shouldn't have done as my own route off my phone tried to take me under a low bridge which would have taken our top off! Lucky I spotted it , not so lucky for all the cars behind me having to reverse and help me turn around. If I had trusted the cheap sat nav which has all my dimensions in it, It would have saved me a lot of messing about, Lesson Learned!!

its a really good system and if it wasnt so big I would have it in the car.
 
Sorry I should have said that back to the original question, after my experience I wouldnt use a car sat nav in the van now.
