what do you put in the water

There used to be a chap on Facts who supplied some tablets, he was in the water purification industry Zappy16 I think but he's no longer on there now.

As someone who only had water (for all purposes) from a brick built well with a crude homemade metal cover over it for the first 20odd years of my life I'm less fussy than most. It's amazing what can live in water and it still be safe to drink :D

I do flush it out thoroughly after it's been standing though.

Never put anything in it. We used to drink it out of the tap but dont anymore. Just use 5 litre plastic bottles which we refill for drinking water now.
Same here. I do drain down at end of any trip, and when refilling allow a couple of pints to flush through drain before putting plug back in.

All I do is pump it all into the grey tank a good dollop of fairy liquid go for a good drive around here then loose it all onto the drive.

The added bonus of using 5 litre bottles is you can easily top them up, thus reducing the amount of times you need to fill the main tank. I have a 25 litre carrier as well with a tap. All three smaller bottles and the 25 litre carrier fit on the bike also.

I have a 100ltr tank for water but only use it for washing, after a bit it starts to stink slightly so i flush well and refill, dont put more than 10/20 ltrs in it as i carry two 5ltr drinking containers for tea coffee or somerimes topping of the toilet tank or filling the 12v hand wash unit in the bathroom.

So now it’s Summer again I’m going to re-fill the water tank , I have used ‘milton’ (baby bottle steriliser) in the past in the first tank full but wondered if anyone has a better idea or do you even bother, I never drink the stuff but may cook with it. but most likely just washing/toilet.
I use water purifier tablets from the local caravan shop all the time, the tank is not drained for the frost free season, never had any "bits" in the water.
"Don't drink it is all very well, but what about when you use tank water to brush & rinse your teath?
And can you really trust the water, even in the UK? When freecamping in spain etc we have obtained water from all sorts of odd places, would'nt want it in my mouth without treatment. Gutrot i do not want again!

Some hot water boilers supposedly don't like chemical cleaners and like Canalsman said previously normal drinking water contains a small quantity of bleach (Chlorine) so tap water will disinfect the system anyway so have never even bothered personally, just a needless faff.
Brim the system, leave it overnight, drain and refill, go on holiday. Oh, and thoroughly drain it when you're back.
I looked into tank disinfection several years ago and it appears that all the bug killing products are basically the same, they're just bleach. 1/2 an egg cup full of Domestos in a 100L tank, flush it through the pipes and let it stand for a couple of hours, then flush out rinse, flush rinse. Too much bleach and you'll leave a taste in the system that'll last forever.

We drink the water from our tank. We haven’t been outside the UK. During the non-freezing months I try to keep it fairly full or empty but not religiously. I also run the water through the tap if it’s been standing a few weeks. Once we get into freezing temperatures I properly drain the system. When it’s time to refill in Spring I sterilise the system - at the moment I have Elsan Fresh Water Tank Steriliser but not wedded to a brand (though note with interest brands mentioned by others here). I am careful to slosh fresh solution about by driving and pump it through pipes and outlets. Leave overnight then empty and flush a few times with fresh water. The flushing is key to leaving no taste.
I can’t claim any science behind what I do but we’ve never got ill from drinking our water.

My biggest problem is that the seals inside my Whale Watermaster Onboard pump don’t like the minute bits that inevitably precipitate out of my hard water and escape through the inlet filter. This annual flush certainly doesn’t help and last year hastened a pump strip down and clean. I am wondering about rigging an inlet to the pump that would allow me to circulate descaler periodically. Sorry I’ve now drifted into a massive deviation from the OP.

Might it be an idea perhaps to drive to a soft water area to fully fill the tank rather than at home, I had to do that at our last house and it wasn't a problem afterwards.

Or maybe put a filter before the pump and heater etc

Thanks for your thoughts. Good to know I'm not alone with this problem. The van converter has also suggested finding some sort of softener/filter device for the input pipe, bearing in mind it already has Whale's OEM fine mesh filter.

Aquasol has worked well for us for years now. We drink the water. Always drain the tank after a trip though

We sterilise the water system once a year with Puriclean. Having worked on many offshore installations I am only too aware of the importance of looking after the water.
