Please can anyone explain the differences between cs and cl's. I know it means certificated, but what does that include ? Are any better than others ?

CL is Caravan Club

CS is Camping and Caravan Club

L is location, S is site, but basically they are the same thing. 5 van max sites with minimal facilities of water and chemical disposal. But some also have toilets, showers, hook ups etc It all depends, you can't tell, till you check with the site.

There about twice as many CC clubs CLs as there are C and CC C's

Some other organisations eg MCC can also license sites and they can call them either CLs or CSs depending on the organisation. It's random I think.

These are small sites usually of 5 units which aren't run by the clubs but are registered with them,Caravan Club and Camping and Caravanning Club.
I prefer them to the big club sites.

Cl is Caravan Club and are limited to 5 pitches but some will book more on because people don't turn up. So you may arrive and find 8 as we did in Cornwall. Usually grass but some have hard standing. Toilet emptying point , water and electric hookup on some but not all. Cs is the Camping and Caravan club equivalent of CL Sites. They allow tents so also have to have toilet and washing facilities but I think they can have more people staying. Some of the Cl sites are part of larger sites and use the Cl registration to fill their larger site as well. We use them all the while. Cheapest we found was Cornwall at £4.00 a night. Just a field. Water one end and waste the other. No electric but great views.

Thanks for replies. I thought caravan club sites had a lot of facilities, ie ehu, water , toilets etc.

They are not club sites. They are run by individuals associated with the CC or CCC, that have an area of ground that they can make available for up to 5 motorhomes/caravans/tents and provide basic facilities. They are cheap and they are great.

If you're a member you get a big book listing the CLs/CSs with contact details and what the place has to offer together with a rough idea of the cost.

What you don't get is regimented sites, wardens full of their own importance, unruly kids and toilets and showers closed just when you want them! You miss the entertainment of a tugger putting his awning up.

Now that's a downright lie, Ive (been amused) or should I say seen many a tugger sticking an awning up on both cl cs sites. they alway's seem to know better and never want a hand

Only but if.Life is full of individuals with their own attitudes be it on a site or CL/CS and you will meet owners with the same attitude. Its how you deal with it as I am afraid many cant and create situations.:D

We all have our individual opinions on the type of location we wish to use, but being a newbie with a Hymer which I could not take inside the London emission zone where I lived, I spent the last three months mainly on the Gatwick Caravan Club Site whilst I prepared The Beast and myself for our 12 month trip around Europe.

What I found was a smallish site, very well run, spotlessly clean, with wardens who were extraordinarily helpful when I asked what probably seemed to them to be daft questions. There were no unruly kids and the toilets/shower block was closed for an hour between 11am - 12am for cleaning. The majority of visitors were out visiting during the day so having the toilets shut for an hour whilst they were cleaned did not seem "inconvenient" and the toilets and showers were cleaned to a very high standard.

The five Caravan Club sites I used during my 3 month workup were all run to a high standard and I found the staff to be very polite. I am sure there are site wardens who have issues, in the same way there are members who seem to go out of their way to be bloody minded.

During my 3 months I paid an average of £12 per night for a full sized pitch with awning space. For that I had electricity (13A) water, toilets, showers, laundry facilities, washing up sinks etc etc. I was staying in a safe and secure environment and for those with young kids, there were playgrounds at the larger sites and all sites seemed to have a dog walking trail.

Whilst not exactly "wild camping" the sites are really not that expensive and at least you generally get a good nights sleep.

The main advantage for me was wandering around the sites looking to see how everyone else organised themselves and what kit they had. Once folk knew one was a newbie, then there was a plentiful supply of free advice!!! for which I was eternally grateful.

Full CC sites can be good value, particularly if you are travelling solo. We are members and until recently had a caravan. Old habits die hard so now, even with a small van, we can still, on occassion, be seen struggling to put up our newly acquired drive away awning. There's nothing like variety to make life interesting. The Caravan Club site at Crystal Palace in London is a gem for anyone who wants to explore the capital.

Sadly the Crystal Palace site is about 2 miles from my flat and is well inside the London Emission Zone, as is the Abbey Wood Site.

Basically, any motorhome built before 2006 does not pass the emission controls so has to pay a daily £100 "fine" to go inside the Zone. The £100 is payable even if your vehicle is parked off road!!!

Most continental cities that have emission zones restrict the zone to the centre of the city. In the UK it is basically everything inside the M25!!! Another typical example of how our civil service manage to gold plate EC regulations. The original Emission Zone concept was designed to keep heavy goods vehicles with dirty engines out of the city centres, but somehow they managed to sweep motorhomes in to the same regulations.

Pity the site is now inside the low emission zone. It helped us spend a week in London, doing all the free museums etc on a shoestring budge

HI,

It's worth checking each Vehicle on the LEZ website, as mine is a 2002 1.9 Fiat Hymer Camp and is compliant, and have spent a few nights parked up in central london.

As others on here have mentioned, CLs & CSs are not club sites and I have found, in most cases, that one does not have to belong to a cloub to stay on them.

These sites belong to farmers, smallholders, pubs, market gardeners, landowners etc. who are interested in income and unless the've been brainwashed by one of the Mafia clubs, could not give a toss whether you are a member or not.

We found a great CL Site near Ilam in Derbyshire. Hill Top Farm so as you can guess right at the top of a rather steep hill. When we arrived there was no one around. Couple of cars parked but no sign of anyone. Following day we saw a guy in a car come and go before I got over to him. Next day we saw him in the afternoon and I asked where everyone was. On Holiday they are due back after the Bank Holiday. So I tied the money in a bag to the door handle of the house. Could'nt find a letter box.
