What Alarm do you have? Is STRIKEBACK worth the money?

Finally after 8 month of searching we found and bought another motorhome. We are thinking to fit a alarm system and after all the hassle we had with the alarm fitted on the previous motorhome, I was looking at some alarms designed for motorhomes.
So what have you fitted? Any STRIKEBACK alarms owners here?

We have had a Strikeback on the van since new. Works every time no faults and yes you can have it on while in bed for all exterior contacts. Is it worth it? Not sure to be honest, but it's a great system and fit by a great team who understand motorhomes inside out re accessories (unlike many motorhome dealers). Other than on value possibly, you cannot beat the Strikeback system.

Never been overly convinced with alarms. There's been so many bad ones about that I don't think they attract that much attention from people these days.

If you're at home you can add the van to an existing house alarm for a couple of quid. If your wild camping and away from the van its likely nobody will be around to do owt. If you're in the van then some cheapy magnetic window/door alarms will likely suffice.

You can get cheapy Chinese trackers for 25 quid with an input that you wire to the central light contact so it will alarm and ring you if someone opens any door and also leave a GPS breadcrumb trail if moved.

We're in a similar position, about to get a new van and wondering about the alarm. It's still under consideration but we're probably not going to bother with one at all as it doesn't make any difference to the cost of insurance and they're generally ignored when they go off anyway. That said, if we did go for one it would probably be a strikeback as it is designed for motorhomes.

I was surprised to find my new van had no alarm but as you mentioned the insurance companies don't appear to be bothered. Mine has a tracker which got me a small discount. I'm still undecided about fitting an alarm, not for when I'm away but for when it's parked up on my drive. Unfortunately I live on a main road that is the route home for the drunks from the town centre. I've already had someone try to steal my hook up cable.

Our last van had a Cobra alarm and we had lots of false alarms and trouble with the door sensors. so when we had a new van we had a Strikeback fitted, that was seven years ago and the only fault we had was a sensor went duff (sorted out over the phone). Recently we had problems with a neighbor having some dodgy electricals that seemed to interfere with all our vehicle remotes, rang up Vanbitz explained the problem and asked where the alarm was fitted so that I could get close with the key fob. After verifying that I was legit Mrs Vanbitz told me what I needed, not bad service seven years after fitting.

We have a Cobra alarm, easy to set for overnight in the van. There is a button on the dashboard I press before activating the alarm this disables the internal sensors. Haven't had any false alarms but have occasionally not set it correctly or forgotten it was on & opened the door (wakes everybody up while looking for the key fob).
Many people seem to forget that if their alarm goes off they press the key fob to stop it BUT this doesn't turn the alarm off, they need to press it again to turn it off. The first press disables the alarm but doesn't disarm it, when you are camped somewhere & you hear a alarm going off you often hear it going off again after a short time until they realise they haven't turned it off.

Remember having a conversation with somebody from Van Bitz & when I asked if having the alarm fitted would stop my van being stolen he said that if my van was on a thieves shopping list nothing will stop them all you hope for is they will pick an easier target.

When alarms do go off, people generally have a negative view towards "that terrible racket, shouldn't be allowed, disturbing people" syndrome. I also learnt that in Belgium, if your van is unattended the police will do what it takes to quieten it, and you can face prosecution, harsh but it is how it is. I think the best alarm is the one that wakes you up, before the burglars get in, so you can reach your rolling pin to iron out whatever presents itself first, usually a face! As for the taking of the motorhome, if these scroats really want your van, they will take it, and our best recourse is proper insurance.:pc:
