:eek:We left the gas hob on and the drove off,:scared: a mile down the road and there was a huge explosion as the glass top shattered.

Can I buy a new one direct and are they easy to fit?

I just cant believe we did that.:help:

Leisure Spares - Smev - 8000 series hobs

Assuming it is a Smev... but they also cater for other makes too and not just the models listed. Also CAK I think do spares CAK Tanks - motorhome - caravan & boat accessories - horsebox & marine accessories - parts - uk - camper parts - caravan parts - motorhome parts - discount accessories

May also be able to find on ebay.

Funnily enough I find I hardly ever use my glass lid. The sink and stove is also a storage place for various kitchen bits and pieces while traveling.

oh wish i'd been there, bet that shook you up!

Well the words that exploded from my mouth ended in hell! and the first word was not blinking.

I was not having a good day as a young lad had clipped my motor home with his carin in a car park.

As luck has it not much damage but I was not pleased.

I can confirm the above post, Cak Tanks supplied a replacement for us last year and their price was the best we found. It also arrived next day!
Excellent service. I bet you had bits of glass everywhere, we did and ours just shattered for no apparent reason. What a BANG it made, I thought it was a gas explosion!

Glass was everywhere and we are still finding it.

Was it easy to fit *****?

We fitted one of those plastic clips used to hold the sink lid up on our cooker after nearly having the same issue as you. For £2.50 (we were ripped off!!) it saves us breaking the lid. We found that if the window behind the cooker was open for ventilation, a strong gust could blow the lid shut.

We did the same thing 2 years ago and can vouch for the noise.

BUT would warn you about getting a replacement. There is a huge array of shapes and sizes to these tops so make sure what you buy will fit.

Thanks Dave.

I dont feel so foolish now.

I did exactly the same on my Cramer hob. Still finding bits of glass a year later!

I ordered a replacement from Leisure spares who couldn't have been more helpful. The lady was reluctant to take my order until I emailed some photographs so she could check she was sending the right one.

Contact details here Leisure Spares

I thnk it was about £35 + VAT and delivery.

Thanks for posting this...I think I'll be looking at covering the top surface with a clear plastic sheet in case mine goes..at least most of the bits hopefully will then stick to the plastic film.

A friend of mine who has a year 2000 caravan tells me when he closes the top the gas goes out does anyone know if this is this true.
My motor home is 2003

Sorry but just a bit of advice
It is not safe to drive with the gas turned on ,( ie) If you have an accident it could ( god forbid ) it could result in a fire from a ruptured gas line:danger:

Does everyone turn their gas off when driving?

... you are driving in a vehicle with flamibles stored in fuel tank, same risk without the gas!

Actually, no it's not.

You are at least doubling the risk. And more than doubling the risk if you are driving a diesel powered vehicle which most of us will be - diesel is not especially flammable, whereas gas is explosive!

It sounds like 60 or so reasons not to make the same bluff again, But we all do it, worry not all part of the adventure and all that.

I dont care who it is, we all make simple mistakes at times...........Anyone ever set off to enjoy a day out ? only to discover they were still connected to the electrickery ? ............My cable dunt extend 4 miles !!!!!!

I remember VWAlan drives around with his gas fridge on. There is clearly more risk, but how much more? It depends on the severity of the impact, your gas installation, and where it is etc. It is not necessarily double. It may be 10% more or it may be 300% more.

I guess you could also say there many more times risk driving at speeds of 50-60-70 than at speeds of 30-40. Both are legal under the right conditions. But if you are very concerned about risk increase, drive at 30-40 mph all the time. That will definitely divide the risk of injury or death during a collision by 3 or 4 times.

When making pronouncements on risk, look at the whole picture, your particular vehicle, and the cost benefit to your own motorhome use and lifestyle.
