Waving

Same for motorcyclists - we mostly wave at each other..... although given the need to retain control it is not always advisable !!!

You might wave ...I bleedin don't! ...I just nod ...it's a lot safer:D

I have always nodded to other bikers because it's like belonging to an exclusive club where we know we are taking a chance, being so vulnerable on two wheels.

I too have noticed that waving takes place with motorhome owners, and so I usually put a hand up or the wife does ...after all, it's polite to aknowledge someone. Why do they wave? ......I dunno really, not a vulnerable group of people are we? I never waved when I had a caravan.

Think it all started in the late 70s early 80s it was exclusively Coachbuilt M/H's "A Knights of the road" thing, then later A Class M/Hs & American RVs were included, it was encouraged by one of the M/H Magazines, can't remember which one, van conversions & VWs were always seperate, older peeps seem to do it automatic you don't need to take your hand off the wheel its just a gesture, fellow traveller/camper its like an exclusive Club, you don't have to join to be a part of. Everywhere i go other campers come and pass the time, say hello, ask directions etc, its priceless!!

We started out by waving, but got a limited response, most people seem to be just miserable *******s,so we dont bother anymore.
And as for van conversions they seem to have an inferiority complex as they never wave at motorhomes.A sad day it was.....

Having a van conversion, and being a former biker, I'm in the 'waving' camp, but I concluded that most other motorhome drivers don't realise I'm more than just another panel van until they have passed me and it's too late. At least, that's what I preferred to believe, rather than they were miserable gits.....

Sometimes I do sometimes I don't  there is just too many around now.

I remember when we had our VW type 2 in the 80's we used to wave at other VW's then when we got a coachbuilt in the early 90's we used to wave only at other coachbuilt's, you could go for a week or two before you saw one. People in an A class wouldn't wave to you as they were then in a different league.

waving

we flash our headlamps first then it gives them time to wave or not u.k and abroad . i think some people dont like taking there hands off the wheel though when we passed our test 1967 we had to do hand signals mind you some young drives do that now

a friend recently bought a 1927 vauxhall open tourer. no indicators . its amazing how many new and even old drivers have no idea how to understand hand signals . right is easy .but ask them for a left turn and they just about all think you put up your left arm. waving is pretty tame compared to driving really old cars. turning left changing gear just cant be done safely never mind advance /retard etc on the steering wheel. good fun though. you definately have to plan your moves.
cheers alan.

We wave if safe to do so , when we went to Skye most did wave ( almost all the French, Dutch, Italians did. Most self builds/conversions did not) could be down to MH drivers not knowing they were campers so they stood waveing back ?

Anyway it's nice 2b nice

I have just come back to M/H after about 15 years in the wilderness, I had completely forgotten about the waving bit, It was a complete surprise to me as I started the 200 mile trip from Devon with my newly purchased M/H that fellow M/H drivers were waving merrily . I soon had a big smile on my face and joined in.

I like to wave if safe as some have said it is nice to be nice....also we tend to play the game: good guy, good guy..W**k if someone does not wave back. As we motorhome mostly in Scotland we find the vast majority wave but when you get to motorways then it is more of a safety issue.

hi ***** .bonjour, tu parle francais. c,est un problem .
hope you had a good break. i speak to anyone make them speak back. we do have to mke the effort in todays world. but i think its btter to wave ,smile ,nod head etc . be a happy camper. cheers alan.

We too are in the waving camp and mostly receive a return wave from fellow happy campers and as for those who don't, we make up some hilarious tale as to why they are so miserable!
From a naturally happy camper :D

Those dapper RAC and AA chaps

I'm old enough to remember when the RAC & AA mechanics toured the byways on motor bikes and sidecars, and the poor buggers had to salute every Club badge they saw coming towards them. My old man was a RAF officer, and my mother just assumed that they knew him, we never did put her right on that one. Sorry Mum.

I always wave, and I smile too,it makes a big difference. Next time someone gives way to you on a narrow road, when you wave "Thank you" give them a big smile too and I bet they will smile back. It always cheers me up to get a smile so it must work t'other way!!
