water heating ebersbacher/truma

Last summer bought a Burstner Delphin t680 from Embee in Bury. It was 5 years old and the heating had been modified from Truma to Ebersbacher in 2006. In use we found water seeping over the floor and Embee authorised Ribblesdale in Preston to sort the problem. They say they bench tested and reinstalled the system with no problems but the problem re-emerged after the winter despite the system being drained and frost prevention heating being used. Booked at Ribblesdale for reinspection/repair with the result that on a 10-30 second inspection from 8' distance I was expected to pay up to £460.00 to replace the heater unit due to it being cracked by frost damage!!!

After pointless pressure to suppliers I investigated myself. The leak occurred around the gasket of an unconnected immersion heater that I was unaware of! Big question now - is the tank (insulated with blue 'foam') from the original Truma set up or the conversion? I am guessing the former as the electrics were disconneted. Bench testing shows that the immersion heater works, so can I fit a plug to connect when on hook up - unit is 240w by 1 kilowatt.

Hope someone can advise.

Jack yes " tounge in cheek " provided there is a thermostat to prevent overheating.

without inspecting the setup and testing it is difficult for anyone to give an answer on line but it must be earthed, a suitable sized cable ( heat resisting ) correct fuse and most important a thermostat.
The modern immersion heater thermostat also has an overheat stat built into it,
if the main thermostat fails the overheat stat turns the supply off and this must then be manualy reset

If the tank looks like one of these: Sure Cal Range from Surejust it will probably be fed from the Eberspacher.

I have one running from a Webasto, it's also heated from the engine so after an hour or so driving we have a tank of hot water :)

I've also wired up the immersion heater so that it works on hook up.

thanks

thanks for the tips - apart from the fact that the eberspacher feeds are at the opposite end everything else looks like the sure-cal product. Am guessing that the converters at Ripon decided to dispense with the immersion heater as there are taped up wires beneath. I cannot find anywhere a control unit may have existed unless it was situated where the eberspacher control unit is now. The immersion unit has a thermostat control in the head and looks like the sure-cal one which they say has a second safety one built in.

water tank sorted but!

problem would seem to have been a crack in the water tank - have fitted a new one and after two weeks in France no leaks!!! However seem to have an air lock in webasto heater unit - any ideas about solving that?
cheers jack
