I have been going through the forum today and reading about 'water' and how to clean the water tank. We drained down the tank for the winter and just used bottles but hopefully we have seen the last of the frost so I'm ready to fill up again.
I am so paranoid about drinking the water whether it's been boiled or not... I'm sure someone once told me they found a mouse floating in their water tank, not sure if they were pulling my leg but he planted the bloody seed and the thought makes me gag 🤢(Now iv just shared other with you )
I don't want to use bottled water as trying to be more mindful of plastic, so thinking of getting some sort of water filter, can anyone recommend one please ?

We have used General Ecology Nature Pure filters now for nearly 20 years. They aren't cheap but are really effective. We have filled up from rivers, streams and other dubious source with no problem. These filters are specified by many airlines. There are some new versions which are described in detail here

I would also recommend using a prefilter to get rid of sediment as the replacement cartridges cost a bit. A high pressure pump helps to get the best out of each cartridge. A suitable prefilter would be a standard 10 inch one with cheap cartridges such as from Screwfix

for initial use Just fill the tank and add some puriclean following the instructions , then run some into the pipework. afterwards drain out the system and refill with fresh water. our main tank is used all the time fed direct from a tap on site so very really need to sterilise but the inboard tank dosn't get used that often so I normally add some aquasol to this to each batch of fresh water. As for water filter depends what you need and what you want to spend we just use a britax maxtra filter jug and keep it in the fridge.

I just bought a Brita water filter jug which uses the Brita Plus filters.

They sell them in Waitrose but the filters are cheaper in Robert Dyas.

I fill up from the mains at campsites and then use the Brita - it tastes good.

Change the filter once a month.

The unusual thing about it is that it filters really fast - about 30seconds which make the whole thing a lot easier to use. I tend to keep an evian bottle full of filtered and a full jug in the fridge.

Another idea - there are natural springs here and there - why not fill up from these whenever you can - you won't always manage it but worth seeking them out.

At home I use a water filter jug with cartridges which last sixty days ...various makes, but aqua Optima was the original jug. In our first van we just refilled a jerry can from taps for drinking water, or from spring water. In Portugal many villages have water taps...never had problems.

If money and space wasn't an issue I would buy a berkey as they are supposed to be fantastic...

British Berkefield HBA MK11 Filter
and with one of these filters,
Ultracarb 10 Inch Short Mount Filter
ideal for even really dirty river water when in africa etc .
but if tank is washed out with clean uk style drinking tap water the chlorine kills the germs , fill drive around empty fill again and you may never use the filter.
mind its there should you want it for drinking water if you are unsure.
the filters do have silver inlay so have the best water purification known to man.

The aquasol would seem to suit us.
Use it the first few times we fill up in April but then dont bother as we are using water every day
This is typically 3 x 10 gallons via watering can.
Water tank emptied over the winter
we have been doing this without the aquasol for 5 full summers...
Only once did we get some slightly dodgy water from a hillside tap
Nida likes to drink cooled water which has been boiled ..I mainly drink tea or a funny fermented brown liquid.

IMO it is possible to go OTT
PS we also keep an old plastic 5 litre water bottle which we used for 4 years but finally decided a newer one was called for.
We top this up from known sources and use it for drinks !

when you think about this logically Jacque in a van water tank.... the only way anything can get into the water tank is in the tiny amount of time in between you taking the cover off the access pipe and your pouring water into it - so its almost impossible for a rodent to be in there - hope that helps

Yes your absolutely right Collette, but after owning that poxy caravan and learning that the little sh&&it's can get in anywhere the most tiniest of holes ... the thought of drinking a film of mouse carcasses and their poo and wee 🤢🤢🤢 oh good lord wait while I heave.
I know it's just me and my imagination ... Im convinced a snake lives in one of my pipes 😂😂don't ask !!

if its a trouser snake - you re VERY lucky indeed - as many of us singles haven't had the pleasure of such a beastie in or vans for some time...... be grateful !!!!
