Watching the World Cup from abroad

We are off to Santander, the Pyrenees and up though France in June and shall miss most of the world cup matches. Ok it's not that important, but it would be nice to watch a few matches.

Thinking of this and for future trips, and especially as technology is moving forward at such a rate. What is going to the best way to watch English tv now and in the foreseeable future ?. I started looking at Freesat and Sat dishes but the portable ones would be tricky to use on the Aires and the rooftop ones are really expensive. I am now considering Wi Fi boosters and Mi Fi systems with data only sim cards to allow the streaming of the odd match and tv program online. For this I understand I shall have to subscribe to one of the virtual networks to allow me to watch BBC and ITV from abroad.

Is there anyone out there who understands such trickery and might advise me please?

You could invest in some 3 data only Sims.
But it will save you a lot of expense and misery by avoiding the World Cup.
You know that the British isles teams will have as much success as the UK in the European Song Contest.

Enjoy your adventures in exotic, foreign parts and warm evenings outdoors.
Save the TV for when you return home.

Streaming abroad using a Mi-Fi uses an awful lot of data.

A must see episode according to the wife of Emmerdale ( approx 24 minutes ) used just over 480mb of data :scared:

We now record Emmerdale and Corrie so she can watch them when we get home.

Personally I'd stick to radio commentaries. Uses little data and there aren't any territorial restrictions.

Or tune into local TV, bound to be matches shown, turn down the volume and listen to the radio ...

Easy fix.....download and pay £6 a month for tv player on your phone or tablet. You cant access tv layer from abroad so you need to purchase or lease Tunnel Bear from the uk. It isnt dear and when you open it up on your tablet or phone abroad, it assigns you an english IP address so you can then open tv player plus inside its open window and stream british freeview tv. Obviously you will need to buy a data sim or do like i do, i tether my phone and cast the program to my tv using chrome cast. Never lost any british tv and this system will work in outer mongolia never mind france.

You will need at least these 2x things :

A) Most important, you need the bandwidth, as a poster says above re:Emmerdale, one episode took up 480mb of data (bandwidth).
you can try WiFi if it is available at the location where you find yourself, but it is unlikely, a SIM card with a big data allowance will help.

B) A VPN service, to "spoof" your IP address to fool the servers regarding your real location. Free VPN services won't be of much use.

If you have a satellite dish, you can often point it at either Hotbird or Astra 1 at 19.2°E but the service is likely PPV so a decoder is required.

Some euro campsites will offer you a TV point on your pitch, where it is common to have many euro channels available for free.

It is also common too see popular sporting events at a local bar, but you won't get a choice of which matches you watch, the local folks will be choosing their favourites.

All of the things I mention are driven by a 30gig data allowance on my i phone 6 which tethers to my tablet and gets cast to my tv. Live streaming data of all sorts either in spain, portugal or france give me various rates but my last 3 weeks away i used an average of 4 to 5 hrs per day and came back with 3.4 gig unued so it really depends on the stream. If its football hd or a high def film, you may struggle but normal tv isnt that heavy in data streams but in essence, if you can get a signal on your data phone or dongle, the tunnel bear is the best way to spoof your location. Ive been using it for ages with no recouse

It is the World Cup so the choice of matches shown in the bar will be chosen by the fixtures not the locals, there is only one match played at a time

I bow to your superior knowledge, I know FA about football, I actually despise most things footbally.

We are in violent agreement. tunnel bear is a VPN service provided by McAffee (I think).

You say that in 3 weeks you used 26.6GB so that is around 9gb per week, which is a lot of bandwidth for TV / streaming, most folks might only have 1 or 2 gb per month, (at least most of the folks that I know who use mobile bb).

btw, 3UK have just made 100GB per month available, for (if I recall correctly) £34 pm.
I signed up and took it to the max, I used it all up in around 3 weeks, watching hooktube (no it's not a porn site) and downloading documentaries.

I've found that satellite to be the best way of getting sporting events, off hotbird or astra 1, using a skybox (chinese set top box) and certain dodgy codes called c-lines. But we can't discuss this topic in a respectable forum.

Wouldn't bother, England will be out after the group stages anyway...;)

If it had been a normal Saturday afternoon you would be spot on, huge choice of matches so unless you found an English bar you would watch what the locals wanted.

I have a 85CM dish and use Clines but it has become difficult in recent times, I now use IPTV, still streaming but everything is available, using FON in France it is easy and bandwidth isn't a problem:idea-007:

I don’t know how you managed to watch tv abroad. My phone is with 3 and last year in France it was so slow it was impossible to stream anything. I was also told I could not use my allowance for tethering abroad

I understand that 3 limit 4g use abroad even though its included in your package. Look at the ts&cs Fair Usage paragraph

Yesterday set up a system for friends to watch the Royal Wedding on a french campsite. MiFi using a Huawei with a 3 PAYG 24GB trio SIM. linked to my laptop. The 3 data sim has a London address and this allowed live streaming of BBC1. Don't think it bufferred as there were no complaints by the viewers. I had a lovely walk.
