Warning to those who get P.I.P. benefit and apply for 50% reduction in Road Tax

Depending on the level of your disability as assessed when your PIP (Personal Independence Payment) is approved you can apply for a 50%, or even 100%, reduction of your road tax. However, you have to apply by post to the DVLA enclosing an application form, V5a, MOT certificate, a letter confirming your PIP entitlement, and a cheque(if required).

In the past 4 years I have applied in good time and found that my motorhome was taxed within one or two weeks when I checked the DVLA site on the internet, although they take ages to present the cheque(on one occasion 3 months!). This year I sent my application in the middle of April for tax beginning on 1st May. I have been checking the DVLA site several times a day for 18 days now and my motorhome is still showing as untaxed. I complained to the DVLA a few days ago and was informed that these applications are taking at least 4 weeks and warned me that I would be prosecuted if I was found on the road without tax. I have now had to cancel my first trip in 14 months because of this. I cannot even tax my motorhome at the full rate because I do not have the V5 which shows a unique reference number which must be quoted when applying on the internet.

So my advice to others who are doing the same thing, apply well in advance before the tax runs out and, if the worst happens take a photo copy of your V5 so you have the reference number so that you can at least apply for full tax on the internet.

I tax our wheelchair access vehicle online every year when I receive the renewal notice I've never done it by post, 100% reduction, just enter the PIP entitlement number where it states to enter it.

I didn't realise how easier it is to tax a vehicle with 100% reduction. Why the DVLA makes it so difficult for those with 50% reduction I cannot fathom.

Yes, I have copies of all these docs on my phone...... except I didn't update my copy of V5 when I uprated the weight of the motorhome. I'm kicking myself now!
