VW T6.1 smart alternator with Sterling 30amp B to B

A year ago I had a Sterling B to B fitted to my VW T6.1 with smart alternator, whilst recently fitting diesel heater to my van I found that the auto electrician hadn’t wired an ignition supplied wire to the Sterling unit.
My question is does my van need this ignition live to the Sterling unit?

I guess the question is "is the B2B working"?
some use a D+ signal to activate, some work on voltage levels. I don't know off-hand about the sterling unit.
 
Sterling units are quite complex and the manual isn't that easy to read. This should be the link to the manual for the 30A B2B. It took me a while to find it on their website as it is under the product page rather than "information".


I don't have a smart alternator but had to use the D+ as I have a battery maintainer so it wouldn't switch off on auto mode.

From the looks of page 6 in the manual you don't need the D+ for a smart alternator.

You'll see from page 4 what I mean about "complex". However if it is on after a short while the lights on the left are the input voltage and those on the right the output voltage. The LED 13, 14 & 15 tell you where it is with regard to the charge cycle. It may take a while to switch off once you stop the engine.
