Rachel Reeves's car tax changes are set to come into effect in just one week, which will see petrol, diesel and electric vehicle drivers slapped with new bills.
The changes to Vehicle Excise Duty were approved in the Autumn Budget, with the changes now increasing in line with inflation.
From next Wednesday (April 1), drivers will see their car tax rates increase by an average of £5, but depending on how polluting the vehicle is, this could increase by as much as £40

Wonder if I will make it to the post office to change mine to disabled before the end of the month, probably not as I didn't make it 6 months back which is why I taxed it for 6 months. This not driving is a pain lol

I have heard that some vehicles (cars) will go up to £735 car tax a year and they are not supercars either.

amxiety is kicking in big time with it......then i read road tax could go up ro £5K
ive calmed down a bit now tho....after reading posts
..think i was really over thinking things when i read it.
thought i had taxed it already.....then realized it was the mot and insurance which was done
tax not due till may....still it would be helpful to know what the tax will be......

Private or light goods (TC11)​

Overall figure to pay in a lump sum SHOULD be £220, the other figures quoted are totals for 12 x monthly by DD, 12 x monthly online payments, 6 x monthly by DD, 6 monthly lump sum.

It seems weird that with the same emissions a 2016 car is £35/Yr but a 2017 car is £440/Yr. Likewise with just a paper excercise up-plating a motorhome to over 3.5T the road tax more than halves even though no changes to the vehicle, no complaint though!

The simple way would have been a chip sending back data on usage & a small bill every quarter, so old gran who only does 30 miles a week shopping pays little, those that are running the roads 24/7 would get a big bill, and rightly so.

Neil, my van has disabled tax and it is all done online after the first time, no need to show insurance, MOT although you have to show proof that you qualify for disabled tax, very easy to do.
The first time it has to be done at the Post Office, (unfortunately, why make a disabled person travel to a Post Office? ) where you have to show the letter for proof that you qualify, the next time that it is due you can do it online, they simply ask if you still qualify, all they need for proof then is your National Insurance number.
I would get down to the Post Office one way or another, no need to wait for the six months to be up either, sorn it then get to the Post Office to tax it from April, you will receive a refund for any months left that you have paid for.


Interestingly, if you don't qualify for the enhanced rate of mobility allowance but only get the standard rate you still qualify for 50% reduction in vehicle tax, this can be a good saving.
