Hope someone can help with this one.

I want to drive my landy down to southern spain in the next few weeks. im in no rush to get their which is lucky with a landy lol. My question. ive taxed it for 12 months etc ,
I want to drive it down leave it their and fly back when i have to have a work meeting i can’t get out every month then fly back a few days later, i have a car at home so im got transport,

i was told that you cannot take a vehicle abroad for more than 6 months at a time, how would they know this i presume when you get on the ferry home , if I’m o to do, i know i need to bring the vehicle home to mot it next April but other than that can id o this on a reg basis.

Also there are companies near airports that let you store you car for a fee , anyone got any experience of these and any other advice welcome.
Kind regards

As long as your insurance company agrees, you should be OK for up to one year. As you have said, you would need to return for an MOT.
I wonder if you could find a garage with a secure compound for storage, it might work out cheaper.

thanks for the qucik reply garth

yes the insurance company is ok

good point with the storage il prob just go down and keep lookin out as i travel around

he things you have to arrange garth to get get out of stoke lol

hi, many do leave their vehicles in spain etc . but legally if its in spain more than 6months you should register it in spain . this is impossible if you arent living in spain .and almost impossible if you do. many take the risk. if your vehicle is outside the uk for more than a year it should be exported . again many take their chances . it is getting harder .all vehicles are photographed going and coming into the country .

sorry i ment to say *****

Yes i was told about needed to take it out the country before 6 months could choose portugal as thinking cadiz area

I do not think you need to worry too much as long as you can mot and test it but I know when I lived in spain a few managed to get mates to do mot over here with their vehicle still in spain ?????? lol
The photo thing not a worry as you might have brought it over in a lorry !
My bikes went in the camper so they never saw them going in or out and was never checked either leaving here or on arrival there .

very good point that

***** im not sure the spanish agree about gib tho lol if i take it they work in sterling the cost of food in gib is much cheaper i would guess

As Alan says more than 6 months in Spain the vehicle needs re-registering. However after a half hearted crackdown on violaters a couple of years back there are still thousands of Brit plated cars with no Tax disc on display. Anyones guess if they are insured and as for MOT ha ha.
I know plenty that have been there for years.
Gib isn't a seperate country as far as the Spanish are concerned, you could argue the semantics in the unlikely event the cops question you on just what constitutes import/export should you get hauled over.... good luck!
Many campsites will let you store a vehicle/caravan, for a fee of course.

Hi landyrubbertramp,
Sorry, can't help you with the Spain thing but just wanted to say Hi, not seen you on here for a while.
Why would you want to leave Sunny Stoke? :lol-049:

They wont let you leave your motor in Gib now unless you have an address there i think now it is 3 months but not sure on that one. You can find some places were you can leave it all year as long as when you take it back on the road it has tax an insurance on But take care they should by law inform the police if a car has been parked for more than six months but some dont it just trying to find the ones that dont i you need i can try and find out which ones a safe.

i was only quoting the rules . i know lots that havent brought vehicles back for years . but i also know some that had vehicles up lifted and crushed. one thing in breaking rules another in knowing .
trouble with proving you took the vehicle out might be hard as they dont book them in or out like they used to.
i cant advise breaking rules can i. you make your own choice.
hard to get safe parking in gib . many that live in gib garage their cars in la linea to save the border hassle. certainly caravans arent allowed in gib. many garage them outside.

A little sensitive!!!!! No seriously, as far as Malaga it is an issue, beyond Malaga many Spaniards hardly know where Gib is and the rest couldn't care less, unless that is, one raises the issue.

In the Alicante area in the month of March 670 cars were removed from the roads 287 vans and 60 motor bikes for being in spain for more than 6 months no tax no insurance and no ITV cars and vans were German France and the UK,1000 euro fine remove the car with in 30 days from the police yard or sign over to be scraped Plus so much a day for being in the police yard.

thanks lotty

i carnt imagine why i would want to leave stoke lol

If they are here more than six months they should be registered to Spanish Plates some motor homes that they know you cant get registered they dont worry about but my friend that came up from Portugal when his dad was ill and stayed 4 months had to park up on our land just encase the came after him.

u thought of my landy getting crsuhed, och

saying that if they tried to crush it it will just jam up the machine crushing it and may put a small scratch on my landy
:lol-049:

6 month

rule
i wander if that after 6 months it must go out of the country i e one day or
6 months in one country in any one year ????/

If it's any help, the border Police/customs at UK ports are not interested whatsoever in minor vehicle matters, and the DVLA/VOSA have a policy of allowing in, without hassle, UK registered vehicles where the tax has expired while abroad. Not sure about MOT though. The ANPR cameras are for terrorism/drug smugglers etc., and nothing to do with minor traffic offences. VOSA do sometimes (rarely) have checkpoints for cars at UK/French/Belgian ports.

Obviously, you can renew insurance while abroad, although they might not like it being abroad for so long. With the EU single market, you can always insure it with a foreign company even though it's UK registered.

Most of these cars are worth peanuts just so there's minimal loss if/when crushed, and there's no way the police can find the legal owners.... let alone papers.

In the ferry terminal carpark at Calais there's usually at least half a dozen abandoned UK plated vehicles. Nearly always T Reg or older, used I suspect for a last trip home from the costas, the security guard said the port cops put a disposal notice on them, then if no one claims them (as if!) off to zee crusher.
Obviously not worth paying for Tax, arranging MoT, Insuring or the price of a cheap ferry ticket.

IMO a campsite is preferable to a street in Spain for long term parking, and as for Gib it probably wouldn't be stolen but you're unlikely to find it in the same place. Space is "very" tight and there's every chance the authorities will want to dig a hole where you have parked!
