Van getting wider and higher at the some time.

Some of the new Mercedes trucks have small cameras rather than mirrors.

We lost a windscreen a few years ago in Murky. Anita saw the tree branch across the road, and the motorcyclists coming the other way in the middle of the road. She let the Motorcyclist live. Scared the life out of me, as I was sat on a storage box just behind the screen!

No seat belt, 4 points on their way for xmas. 😂

trouble round our neck of the woods is the tarmac lanes are now narrower than the tractors and lorry's tyres so the grass verges have been worn back so theres a foot wide strip of mud or stone either side of the tarmac, which means the big vehicles mirrors are also a foot closer to the hedges than they used to be. the hedge trimmers only trim the new growth they dont move the hedges back from the lane.

In Aberdeen a few years back the council decided to replace the asbestos walls between their “terraced” garages with breeze block walls. Once the work was completed none of the tenants could get their cars in as the garages were too narrow. Cars had become wider over the years since the garages were originally built and the new walls made the garages narrower. Each set of garages had to be changed to 5 instead of 6 in a unit.

I have a pet theory that as vegetation (grass, debris, mud etc) encroaches onto the edges of the road where there are no kerbs, the apparent usable road reduces in width. when the road gets a new layer of tarmac it is only laid to the ‘new’ edge. This makes the road narrower.
How’s that for a conspiracy theory.?

Not required for Murky
Going through the windshield like a missile is not required either, I picked a chap of the road years back as he had went clean through a hillman Avenger screen and up the road about 50 ft, needless to say he was not in good shape, get a belt big lad. (y)

Does it have sprinter mirrors ?
If so you can buy all the parts separately
No it has the custom Spanish mirrors made just for Hymer. I has thespecial bolt that joins the top arm to the body break. Iwas informed that it would require a complete mirror from hymer as the makers were under contract not to supply parts. £1000 or so for a new one. I fabricated one instead.

Mrs D put her hand through our Camos Dome two days before a five month trip to Europe a few years back. I manged to find a motorhomer 100 miles away in Oldham that had a defunct Camos Dome mk1 in his garage and drove up that night to buy it (just for the dome) for forty quid. if it had been me i would have gave it away but it was still a big saving on a replacement plastic lid. Might be worth asking around as there were a fair few that packed up working when the satellite requirements changed or whatever it was.
What were you doing to her making go on thee roof to clean it?

I must be imagining things but my van has grown wider and higher. Either that or the roads are getting narrower and lower.
We went out for a trip and going along a country road there was a loud noise from the roof immediately after I saw a branch hanging down, too late to miss it. It managed to smack the side of my satellite dish in, breaking the light plastic dome. I stopped down the road and climbed out the hatch with some clear repair tape. there were several cracks and a lump missing. I taped them all up and hoped no water could get in. The replacement was over £200 plus. so it was a case for out with the glass and epoxy resin when I got home, reasonable but needs finishing in warmer weather.
Yesterday we out for a day trip and I was forced further to the left in a narrow road and smash! a really loud bang so I thought it was the dish again but no it was the left mirror arm fairing on the left, not the roof this time. I found the missing part at home in the daylight, so took the car and drove the15 miles back to where it happened, in the vague hope it might still be there, but in bits, so I could copy it. Joyous delight It was on the verge, undamaged and intact.
I found a sawn-off tree branch sticking out about a foot. They could easily cut it back to the hedge line but obviously didn't. the number of scrapes and scratches that we have, seem to indicate the councils seem to have forgone the trimming that used to be done. I am thankful that the Hymer is a Sprinter base, as it would be a lot worse with a FIAT which is a fair bit wider. Anyone else noticed damage like this from the lack of trimming back now?
My wife and I came from New Zealand in 2019 and picked up a new Elddis Peugeot motorhome in Glossop.
We then spent 5 months touring the UK away from the motorways and during that time we saw maybe two instances of the scrub on the roadsides being maintained. Were amazed at the narrowness of the roads. Within the second week we had a broken mirror, even though I drove off the road to try to avoid it. We were to have a second collision with our mirror this time in Snowdonia, Wales this time my new Milenco guard saved the mirror.
Broken mirrors are almost unheard of in NZ, while driving, where the roadside shrubbery is kept cut back from the road with regular maintenance.
We still have scratched windows from the constant bashing through roadside scrub around the UK. It put a bit of a damper on an otherwise fantastic trip.
Safe travels everyone.
