A new one will be available for sure. You could rebuild the entire VW part of the van with parts availableIf it needs a new starter motor, Merl, then a new one it will have.
I’ve looked up (I think!) what they might cost for this particular van version.
1. they appear to be available and 2. they don’t seem to be too expensive (sub £100 - excluding fitting, obvs) - but got all my fingers and toes crossed as ever!
Often the most cost-effective solution is just to replace the bugger rather than spend ages troubleshooting the issue and trying to repair - especially when a part gets to an age when it is more than likely pretty well worn out anyway. Will all depend on the verdict from the garage.
You have to remember I am not a mechanic and I’m too old and buggered to start and learn how to be one now…. there is no way I’ll be taking out a starter motor and dismantling it!!
This is why in my motorhome, I gave the garage a new alternator to fit. I've no doubt the old one could be serviced and fixed, but it is in such an awkward place a lot of the cost will probably be labour either way, plus it is 17 years old so a fix is likely shorter term solution than a replacement, and plus it gives the opportunity to get a better performing one in there.
