Just thought you may be interested in my recent (back yesterday!) use of my (New to me as a newbie) POI's

Had to deliver wifey to North Scotland, did a bit of research and selected two or three pubs for the first night. All went well, the one we chose was superb
This continued for the remaining 4 nights, different place/pub each night

Use local swimming pool for a shower

Emptied loo in public toilet found on the POI

Got water, also using POI

All in all a complete success, this will be our, UK at least, preferred option from now on. No booking, no paying £15 to stay in a field (after booking!), just motorhoming as it should be, spontaneous, and pot luck! The POI's downloaded into my Garmin worked real well too, BTW!

Good to hear, we've had loads of great times too.

Don't forget to keep your eyes out for possible places on your travels and add to the database. Cheers!

sounds like you had a good trip, as a CL owner though I find it difficult to understand how spending the evening in a pub drinking or having a meal is cheaper than a CL, nothing against it and no doubt even if parked up on a CL many of you would be in the nearest pub anyway. However a pub carpark is a public place so you could, should plod so wish be charged if you are found to be over the limit in charge of a motor vehicle. Just saying like, hee hee.

In theory yes, you're right, you could be breathalysed, however I think it unlikely and have never heard of such a case.If you have already arranged with the pub landlord to stop overnight it's unlikely to hold up in court if it ever got that far.In fact the thought that I could be over the limit has never crossed my mind until seeing the above post.
Pub stops are a brilliant idea and we have used quite a few now and been very pleased with them, some are near a main route and make for a convenient stopover en route to your destination.

Free booze at CLs then if pub carpark and booze is no cheaper ;)

One of the things about a pub stopover rather then a CL is - as I understand it - you have to be a member of the Caravan Club to use a CL, so if you are not, all CLs (according to the rules) are out of bound.
Didn't realise you can add the POIs on here to your Garmin! I will have a go at doing that I think :)

It's horses for courses really. I'm presently on a CS for 4 nights because I want a relaxing break with the BBQ and chairs out in the present heat, but very few are close to pub or civilisation without driving. Mostly I prefer to tour using POI's in out of the way places and have only used a pub stop once at Tintern Abbey. This was very pleasant but probably cost £60 by the time I'd finished and I find eating out at lunchtime more comfortable in my old age.

This subject has been done to death . Technically/could/maybe never going to happen . The poster has brought it up twice in as many days . Why ?

pub car park public place?

pub carpark would be private ground, your statement falls at first word:cheers:

Doesn't matter. It has public access so drink-drive rules still apply (as they do on your own driveway).

Technically, it is also illegal on a campsite too as that has public access. However, it's a lot easier to argue if you've set up camp with an awning and hook up with chairs outside.

Anyway, as Alcam has said; this has been done to death. Do a search and you'll find loads of postings about it.

Hi

Already have, the OSTRICH pub in Norfolk is now permanently closed

The excellent BUTCHERS ARMS in East Ruston is now added, now that would be an epic nightstop!

only if you are seen to be actually driving the said vehicle into such a place! then the police can apprehend and charge with d.d.also you can sit in a vehicle, over the limit( any seat )on the public road and be charged with intention to drive under the influence, this charge does not stand up in court if you are on pub carpark with permission

Here are my observations:-

In a round trip of some 1300miles, different routes north and south bound I saw a total of 5 police. 3 were setting up a "sting" op on the A92 Dundee to Aberdeen, doubtless a drug raid, the other 2 were causing chaos on the M74 south after a minor shunt had closed one lane. I am virtually certain that none of those would be even remotely interested in a simple campervan parked, discretely, at the back of an off street pub car park. Probably, I'd have been more likely to have been anaesthetically gassed to steal my £10,000 camera, thoughtlessly left on my dining table!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As an experiment, I did not phone any of the pubs I stopped at, simply mentioned to the bar person that I had found them on the Wild Camping POI, all were pleased to see me and were well aware that I was intending to stay the night, in my camper, in their car park. My average spend was circa £25 per night, including all meals and drinks, somewhat better value than £15 to stay in a remote field with no more than a tap and a bog drain!!

No booking was necessary, please note "Phone 07812385915 to book" I simply turned up and asked, see above.

My MH is totally external energy independent so I needed no hook-ups, etc, I got water from the POI taps and emptied the loo cassette at public loos also found on the POI's

For me, and my wife, this is now the way ahead, we may be "newbies" to this web site but are far from any other form of "newby!!!" We are street wise and careful where we stop, it may have been missed by the CL/CS owners that AIRES de Camping Car in most of Europe, are, more or less exactly in the spirit of Pub Stops. And, we don't have to join the CC or C&CC Mafia to use them!!!!

I used a Pub carpark (Alison Arms in Lancs) last night on the recommendation of a member here, and found it very handy.
Just asked in the pub for permisssion initially. Bought a couple of bottles of cider (although I had some in the Camper, it seemed appropriate). So a secure overnight stay for cost of £6. Perfect :)
