Is there a android app that allows you to use a mobile as a server to link my tablet/netbook to get online?

My HTC Wildfire does it as a matter of course. On O2.
I've even managed to get t'internet access in regions that the provider "says" isn't covered by their network.

Wireless and Networks--- Portable Wi-Fi hotspot--- turn on hotspot. Done

My ZTE Monaco does too. Even my old "not so smart" phone could be used with a USB cable to get internet for a PC.

Although tethering is 'technically possible' directly with many smart phones, providers often try to prevent you doing this unless you pay extra in your contract/plan. These Apps are a way of getting around that restriction.:hammer:

I use the 'tethering' on my Galaxy.
It was the Orange customer service's that told me about it :D More surprising because I was asking about subscribing to a dongle at the time!

Look for an option such as "Hotspot" within the phone. It will then advertise a security code which when you search for the wireless network from your laptop etc will ask you for the code and away you go.

On my Samsung smart phone I do this:

SETTINGS - then where it says Wifi, Bluetooth etc GO TO .....MORE, THEN TETHERING AND PORTABLE HOTSPOTS. TICK THE BOX NEXT TO PORTABLE WI-FI HOTSPOTS. NEXT, GO TO CONFIGURE PORTABLE WI-FI HOTSPOTS - put in your name or whatever you want, then in the next box put in a password. AND THAT'S IT. YOU WILL SEE LITTLE BLUE SQUARE COME UP ON THE TOP LEFT OF YOUR HOME SCREEN.
TO TURN YOUR PORTABLE WI-FI OFF JUST UN-TICK THE BOX.

ive got an i phone with orange but afeter i think 5 meg i have to pay for data given i work from mylaptop. in addition to my orage i phone contract i took out a month to month contract with 3 for 18 per month for the sim just use phone as personal hotspot job done unlimmited data

I don't understand much about this so I asked one of our Spanish Doctors what he thought. He said that it could prove very expensive on data charges and I would be better parking outside McDonalds. I hope this is good advise as I am off to France for 3 weeks with only my Nexus 7. I will report back on success while I am there or failure when I get back. :)

Until the data roaming changes come in to affect (not sure they have yet), absolutely DO NOT use your mobile for data abroad.

In the UK, it will depend on the service you're on; with Orange I use it instead of a land line connection full time.
Did consider one at work, but it costs me about the same extra a month to use my mobile, but I can use it where ever I am.

And yes, since Android 2.3 or so I think, it's been included as a standard option.

personally I have installed PdaNet

why this one ? because it doesn't involve changing the software in the phone , and it offer the possibility of using wifi , usb or bluetooth

just install a small programme on your laptop [ or whatever ] , activate the phone to tether [ a couple of clicks as per their instructions ] et voila !

mobile phone hot spot

I use a 3g dongle but when that cant get a signal I revert to my iphone 5, the hotspot feature is free if you have an internet signal, if you are having to use 3g/ee then it uses your data allowance, my allowance is 3 gig and so far I have never gone over it

Thanks for the replies, we normally rely on getting free wifi both here & abroad, both our phone contracts don't have data (we even have to pay for texts) but on the upside they cost us nothing £0 if we don't go over 50 mins a month to landlines or O2.
Next week we are off to Anglesey for a week & our daughter is coming with us, she has a Samsung S3 Galaxy & a lot of mobile data in her contract & said about using her phone as a server. So will try the suggestions given.
