Has anyone ever managed to update satnav maps using a mobile router connected to their Mac or windows machine?
Or is there another way of updating the maps?
Thanks,
Mal.

I use a mobile router at home and updating TomTom maps is straightforward (windows) but Garmin express detects that it is a mobile router and pops up a message saying it cannot update unless on a high speed home broadband connection, strange because I am getting over 300mbps
I had to use a mesh router so that fooled Garmin express and now I can update my Garmin as well.
You can update Garmin satnavs without using Garmin express though.

I have in the past updated the maps on a Garmin satnav using a Windows laptop connected to a 4G mobile router. However, I did away with the dedicated satnav device in 2023, so have no recent experience. I regularly update CoPilot GPS maps on my smartphone and onboard Android head unit using a mobile router (5G and 4G respectively).

Shouldn’t need a VPN if your in the UK
I agree but if Garmin Express thinks you're on a mobile network then the IP address is the only way I can think of how it knows
A VPN connected to a UK IP might just fool it.

You need a good strong 4g or better still 5g signal and that the quaterly updates ( new maps ) can be big, as much as 10GB depending on model.
I have 5G at home, but I still had problems. I know you are more experienced than I am with Garmin, so why do I have problems? I don't know, but I got around it it

If it thinks your on a mobile network that will be because it’s NOT connected to the WiFi or the devise settings need looking at.

If your mobile phone or other WiFi device is working simple go to google and enter “check my location” if that comes back as correct do a speed test, if that’s ok it’s not your network, it’s the garmin.

Now go to garmin and check it’s logged into the CORRECT WiFi a/c. If not change it, if so go to settings and check that the devise is set to allow updates via WiFi

I'm referring to the public IP address not the local IP address, the public one will be the same even if you're connected to the WiFi, in fact I'm pretty sure the Garmin wouldn't connect directly to a mobile network unless it had it's own SIM
