unidentified noise, suggestions welcome

I've got a talbot express, 2.5 TD, 1991, 70k on clock - the problem is there is a loud humming noise when i'm travelling at speed, took it to my mechanic, staight away he says wheel bearings,(front) so had them done, picked it up today and the noise is still there, he assured me that the wheel bearings did want doing, i do trust him as he's been my mechanic for 15 yrs, could it be the rear wheel bearings? dave (mechanic) just said bring it down to listen again, so i thought i'd ask you clever lot before she goes back

Don't suppose you have any flat straps used for tying loads on that vibrate above a certain speed.

Apart from that, guess you are going to have to trust your trusty mechanic. Maybe he needs to take it for a proper test drive and stick his head out the window and work out where it is coming from - or guarantee that his fix will cure the problem or no charge.
 
Could just be tyre noise, especially if you are either relatively new to the camper or it's tyres.

I would agree that turning the stereo up would be the best fix!

I've just had a new tyre on and my brother in law said it could be that but the noise is really loud and vibrates through your feet

well........ my car failed mot and he's not charged me for work done on that cos of MH problem so i suppose he's been fair there, and he is going to check it again, no loose straps tho, wish it was as easy as that

Might not be balanced properly if it's vibrating, that's a cheap option to try.
 
If you have rear wheel drive it could be the prop shaft. Dip your clutch and freewheel for a bit and see if the noise goes. I had a similar problem from driving on too many beaches.
 
Does it do it in 4th gear as well as 5th?. My old Hymer with similar running gear used to hum-whine in 5th gear. I believe it was a common fault with early G/boxes. Regards Helmit

get your mechanic to check if one of your rear tyres as bulge in it as this would cause the noise and the vibration under your feet ,

yes it does, once it reaches 40mph its a constant humming and you can feel it through the accelorator pedal, so what did you do?

I will try that but it is front wheel drive, should that make a difference?

Jen I have a Talbot Express also and if you go to these web sites and go to camper van forums on Prelove web site and then the Talbot Express Motorhome page there are 255 pages of help just click the 255 number and add your question on the end of the list and wait for answers. The link is

This is a free site set up by a Talbot owner and is also very good.
The next site is a guy who is a sea of information who as made a web site so check it out.

Now a few things it could be first it could be drive shaft joints starting to wear, a common fault with these is engine mount rubbers wearing out. Wheel bearings which you seem to be having checked and tyres like others have suggested. It could be a gear box problem to so good luck with it and I hope its just a small thing.
