The government in their wisdom have been ferreting around for other ways to relieve us of our money. Following the expenses of the foot and mouth outbreak and mad cow disease it has been decided to Levy a tax per head on all livestock that could be affected by any widespread epidemic, prices have been quoted of £10.50 - £100 per animal per year. They have noted that horses should also be included. That would be the end of our native breeds, the foals of which have only been fetching £30 -£60 each off the moors. Now that all horses are required to have passports even if they don't travel ownership is easily checked. We are fast becoming a police state, heading toward communism purely because private ownership of anything is fast becoming impossibly expensive. Please take a little time to sign the E- petition to object to this .

thata nice i have 4 mares in foal all we want then a tax on our 6 dogs:eek::D i hope they ferkin get it:rolleyes::D

Petition to: rethink the Government?s plans to place an additional charge on horse owners in order to pay for a new animal health body, on the grounds that any such move would complicate the process of responding to animal disease outbreaks without THIS is the proper place to petition against government proposals , the link previously posted is sponsored by various organisations including the countryside alliance, thoroughbred horse breeders ass, etc , none of whome I am willing to provide with my name, address, email address, postcode or anything else for that matter.
I have signed the gov't petition but I will not appear to support the other aristocracy or appear to be doing so by supporting their petition in any way, some of you may feel the same.

Firstly your unlikely to see this master plan come to fruition so just calm down class.

And a on a slightly positive note I would like to say this.

In my county at least, we are seeing increasing numbers of absolute morons collecting horses,
partly due to the money climate just, now a lot of ponies are advertised throughout the internet and change hands for a couple of hundred quid.
Often being bought with little regard for their welfare, and after the novelty has worn off and the fields full of ****, they get left unfed or watered to go wild on a field.

Near here some dozy bint had Eight roaming Ten acres,
The RSPCA visited and removed Four of them, only return them when she promised to look after them,

Needless to say that lasted about one sack of pony nuts, and owing a years rent on the field she did a flit the other week.

I reckon with the threat at least of this pretend tax, it might deter some of these people. Doing this.

there is never smoke without fire:rolleyes:, once some prick who usally it dosn't effect suggests an idea at a quando sooner or later it happens,we pay nearly 80% of every think we earn in taxes one way or another and they want the rest, every horse now as a passport now why:mad:,years ago we had a few pigs or bullocks to bank a bit of cash in  but with differant rules and regulation that stopped, the country is bankrupt and we are paying for it

If this proposed tax is a result of the Government having to pay out money [ OURS } because of outbreaks of Disease why shouldn't owners of said animals bear part of the cost in the form of a licence? another Hobby Horse of mine is the Clowns that go out in boats with no experience or safety gear and have to be rescued by the Lifeboat people who put their lives on the line for the idiots who don't have to pay for their rescue,, Rant over.

unfair tax on horses

As far as native breeds on Dartmoor go, the ponies that only make £30-60 are not native breeds but a mish mash of all sorts of unwanted stock that are only bred for meat and are not suitable for riding. Personally I find it deeply disturbing to see these terrified wild foals and some adults being shunted off to the abbatoir (Bristol, I think), so the sooner it stops the better.
There some are proper Dartmoor ponies bred on the moor but these go for considerably more as they are in demand as riding/driving ponies.

AND are the ONLY emergency service where the members (those manning the boats) have NEVER been assaulted, Because they don't take the governments shilling to spout, their propaganda like many other so called charities, I Always donate to the RNLI God bless 'em

Agreed - providing those dangerous things don't involve potential harm to others and providing the participants don't expect others to put their lives at unecessary risk to rescue them. I would like much of our H&S overload to be replaced by the attitude I have seen in several other European countries - that "your safety is our concern but your responsibility".

That attutude already exists in ths country in that if you ride a motorcycle or ski skateboard etc & are injured the local E&A may consider your injuries to be self-inflicted & treat you accordingly

I can't imagine that the NHS would refuse to treat any emergency on the basis of self-infliction - although I have heard of ambulance services sending bills to people who they consider to have brought their injuries on themselves. But my comment about the attitude "our concern but your responsibility" was intended to refer more to the raft of H&S legislation which has tended to stifle so many activities and much of which we could do without.

you could see a lot of old "mares" being put down.
tony

I know one that should have been put down at birth.:D
Anyway where are you expected to put the tax disc?

Where I live I think they should tax cycles. that would make the tresury some lolly
