No Alf1, did'nt know it was there,will certainly visit next time up in the vicinity.
My late father-in-law was a 2nd engineer in the Merchant Navy whilst on the Russian convoys, he was torpedoed and sunk twice during the conflict only to go back and continue his duty!

A relative of mine was also on the Russian Convoys. His ship was torpedoed on one of the Winter ones and you did not last more than a few minutes in the water at those temperatures. A Royal Navy escort vessel broke standing orders and came alongside to take off the survivors. He was also torpedoed on an Atlantic convoy and picked up a few days later.

Ironically, he left the sea as soon as the War was over and went back into the Pits. He and his Father were both killed in the explosion at Easington Colliery in May, 1951. :sad:
 
There is a memorial to a lady I forget her name it's from the U.S. NAVY one of their boats sank at night several locals came to the rescue the one that swam ashore this lady walked several miles with a jug of tea for them she did this several times the don't make the Mike that now.

Convoy memorial

Sounds very interesting,must get up there soon and have a good look round.

We stayed at Cove for a couple of nights in the autumn of 13. There was a RN exercise going on with a Destroyer and a couple of cutters.

The highlight for us was a low level run by what I thought might have been a Lancaster though it may well have been a Wellington. Massive four engined WW2 bomber with a magnificent engine noise. Filming possibly for the Arctic Convoy memorial activities. Wonderful sight to see.
