UK to Slovenia

Hi everyone,

We are planning a road trip in our camper to Slovenia via France, Belgium, Germany and Austria. We have looked online and it seems we can travel through all these countries apart from Austria where we need a Vignette. Anyone driven through Austria? Is this something we can sort out at the border or do we need to do it in advance?

Cheers
We did this a few years ago and never paid tolls.
Our route took us via Radstatt,Tamsweg and Klugenfurt ( not sure it they are in correct order)
Lovely scenic route, plenty of great wee places to visit and stop overnight.
The route then went to Ljubljana, stopped at Lake Bled site then drove down the coast to the island of Krk.
Stayed on cracking site in Punat, wee tourist train runs along the coast into town via small eateries and tat shop.
Going back in May we hope.

I remember stotties...and having it explained to me when I first started working in the Toon!

Fatty cakes straight out of the oven slice open like a bread bun, fill with butter yummy, if the butter runs out and off your chin then you have got it right 👍👍

No ! I bought this it is just called "Stollen".

What did Jane use with her cakes....

If you serve an Arctic roll upside down..is it an Antarctic roll ?
Very nice with Penguins !

If you push someone wearing night apparel down a hill..
Is that a JimJam Roly Poly ?

I dont think I had one for Austria when we went to Slovenia but we are under 3500kg and didnt use toll roads / motorways. What I will say about Austria though is its fabulous especially the Austrian Lakes east of Salzburg. If your going that way, well worth a few weeks there and the Tirol region. I reckon a lot of motorhomes avoid Austria because of the dreaded Go box which is a shame as its stunning.
What's the Go box?

Hi, this is a trip we did a few years back. Mainly Croatia, but you might get some info from it.

Aires on a shoestring 7

Below are some of the FREE aires, & picnic sites we used on the latest trip. Others we used have already been shown in Aires on a shoestring 6 5 4 3 2 & 1. = See below.
Copy & paste co ordinates into Google Maps, photos below.
I will try to answer any questions about the sites listed.
Because on the pre Italy part of the trip I needed to keep to a schedule I used a couple of motorway service stations that had designated motorhome areas.

Been through Austria 4 times in a >3.5 you don't need a vignette or go box. IF you avoid motorways and tolls, unless they have changed things in last 5 years.

BUT review any route in advance as you may have to "go over the top" rather than through a nice easy tunnel.

BTW I suspect comparing a Bled cake to a vanilla slice is like comparing a pastel de nata to a custard tart.

Hi we did the same trip before covid and managed to travel on minor routes through Austria without a Vignette as unless it has changed they were only needed on the motorway. Do buy a one off pollution sticker for Germany if like us you have a large diesel motorhome and want to use city centre Stelplatz. They are not expensive and last for the life of the vehicle or sticker

More like a Tesco custard tart ?
:devilish: :eek::unsure:

No one has mentioned driving the “Grossglockner pass” , the highest mountain road in Austria. Well worth the diversion if you have a head for heights, I only did it once in my last van and set the brakes alight on the descent, just saying .
Stunning road although if I remember rightly isn’t that the one with a 50€ toll?
