Dear Wildcampers,

Does anyone have a Ducato/Boxer/Relay with an integrated UConnect SatNav (TomTom) and know how to get it to display current speed? It displays speed limit and shows an alert if you're traveling faster than limit - so it must know current speed. But I can't see how to configure the display to show the speed.

Thanks.

Richard

A couple of cars I have driven, including my current one, with built in satnav don't display speed. I think it's deliberate on the part of the vehicle manufacturer so that there are not two devices showing potentially different speeds which could lead to legal arguments. Also satnav speeds tend to be a bit laggy. FWIW my Ducato was consistently 4mph higher than the third party satnav I use. My current Renault Master also reads 3 to 4mph higher.

The SatNav uses the information obtained from the satellites to work out speed over the ground. The vehicle normally uses a sensor on the gearbox that gives it mph BUT the rolling distance of the tires is different as they wear down so the mph is just a best guess. I have one of the UConnect units in the shed. What a heap of junk it is as regards a SatNav. You cannot update voices, maps cannot be updated, the POI's can only be added one by one and not as a complete file. Took mine out and replaced it with a Blaupunkt. That was an Android based system and you could have a speed overlay APP that showed the speed over the ground. When I updated the software to IGO Nextgen the software had a speed display but the Blaupunkt was struggling with the software and was to slow to work correctly. New MH has Pioneer SatNav that is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard so gone back to a tablet mounted on the right hand side of the dash using CoPilot with an Android APP for speed over the ground again. Works very well. Just use the Pioneer for the radio which is very good.

I have UConnect unit in my Ducato and it will not display current speed. It's also a SatNav that was designed to be used in Fiat 500s so you cannot input the dimensions of your 'Van. As a SatNav it's useless to me so I just use the reversing camera and Ipod music playing facility. I purchased a secondhand TomTom 6000 Trucker with lifetime European map updates and lifetime Traffic. Much happier now.

Just posted on another forum re Sat Navs, I went all out, emptied my piggy bank a few years back, and bought a Snooper D8000, so happy with readout, ease of updating, TV/radio reception, and of course the speed and speed camera info. It's easy to update as well

I use one of these Huawei 8" tablets with IGO Nextgen ( Free ) and CoPilot ( Free ). Simple Android file system so you can add speed cameras and Wildcamping POI files. Works great with a magnetic stand on the right of the dashboard. Quad core processor so very quick. Speed overlay App available that sits over the top of other applications. But it can also be used for various other bits and pieces like taking pictures, surfing the internet and of course E Books about 400 of them. Cheaper than a dedicated SatNav and far more use.

Even after updating, the Boxer satnav, when I bought it new, we still seem to be driving through fields between Thirsk and Dishforth.

Number14, the satellite speed is almost certainly much more accurate than the van speedometer. Most cycle speedometers are more accurate than a car speedo and all my satnavs have agreed with my bike. Of course the bike speedo has to be very accurately set up to be of any use in this respect. Harry

Knowing your speed with the Uconnect is probably the least of your worries, it's a pile of junk that is not cheap to get shot of due to the integration into the canbus system, even the speakers are linked into the body ecu. It is better to have never put the thing in in the fist place.

Not a fan then;)

Well! Despite it not displaying current speed, I have to say I quite like it and think it's a pretty good system. I'm happy to stick with it!
