tv and aerial installation help

Hello members i wish to install tv and aerial or sattelite to my 1st ever motorhome or even better someone to do it for me then explain how it all works.

So if any member can do this for me and lives in or around leeds / west yorks i would really appreciate your help i have just purchased a ford tranny autosleeper legend and it has a aerial / sat connection on the outside of the vehicle and two white cables running inside to were the previous owners had there tv.

Thats it thats all i can tell you i am totally green as far as technology goes,so if you could contact me please and give me your contact details i will email you or ring you to explain what help i need.

I am willing to travel to you and i am also willing to pay a reasonable amount of money for any help given if you can install it for me.

I've just picked up one of these 12/24V Outdoor Digital Aerial : Outdoor TV Aerials : Maplin Electronics
well I can honestly say it is one hell of an aerial better than any motorhome/caravan type I have ever had, easy to fit you can even fit to the inside of a window if needed. I'm so pleased with it I now plan to ditch the sat dish in favour of the digital tuner already built into my TV, less crap to cart about and a lot fewer cables. I know if it works in the spot I'm in at the moment it must work virtually anywhere.

All you need is an 'F' connector on the end of the sat cable and an ordinary tv or 'F' connector on the end of the aerial cable (depends what your connecting it to inside the van) and that's it. They both connect to the coax cable in the same way. Just google aerial or sat connector for images and instructions. On the outside box on the van all you need are the female connectors. It's very simple, honest.

They cost around 50p each and the storekeeper will probably show you how to do it if you ask.

That looks good. Is it omnidirectional or does it have to be pointed towards a mast?

You do need to point it towards a mast for best performance but it's pretty easy if you have a signal strength meter, the area I'm in at the moment is down low in a vally surrounded by buildings and woodland, once I had positioned it on the side of the truck I just pointed it in the rough direction of other aerials in the area and tuned in the digibox. I'm not getting all channels at the moment but I was amazed to get anything in this area as I'm low down and behind and my parents house and they have a bloody great mast and boosters in the loft and without the boosters they don't get a signal at all. I can't even get a constant signal with a satalite dish. In normal area's these aerials must be excellent.

Hi fulltimer I picked up one of those aerials from maplins and I have to say that it works great with my new digital tv on mains but I have now got another problem in that my tv or aerial will not work from 12v sockets.Both sockets are live but nothing happens any suggestions as to what I should do I have changed the plug on tv to a Clipsal but apart from that im stuck.
Iwas hoping to get it going before I go away on Monday so if you coul;d suggest trying something else it would be much appreciated.

I also bought the same aerial off ebay £29.95, after trying it I couldn't get any channels. Rang up the place I got it from & they sent me another antenna & the power amplifier, still it wouldn't work. rang them again & the guy I spoke to said couldn't understand why it wasn't working & said they would refund me. I said I would return both aerials but he said don't bother. So I got my money back & now have two aerials (trouble is they don't work) didn't try them on mains supply though. If they work on mains but not on 12 volts it seems a bit strange, I notice on the box it says for 12v/24v, I did speak to somebody at Maplins & he reckoned they had sold loads to lorry drivers who thought they were great.

If it is a voltage issue I could always use my power supply that I use for the laptop that will give out up to 20 volts.

Just had a thought, I have 2 batteries, is it possible to run a cable with the batteries connected in series to give me 24 volt supply while still keeping the batteries connected in parallel for the normal 12 volt??????????

Hi kontiki I have a problem with the aerial in that it has to have power to it to work it will not work for me if I just connect it to the antenna outlet on my new digital tv.
But if I plug in to the 12v socket or the 230v it works fine the only thing I am stuck with is the tv will not work of the 12v socket only on mains . guess I have bought the wrong tv.

I just wish there was someone I could contact in the leeds area for guidance because I am thick as a workhouse sandwich with regards to anything electrical but hey ho it will soon be xmas. Hope you get sorted out cheers Merry xmas. Ron. :wacko:

Is there a Screwfix outlet near you?

They sell a range of TV aerials at cheap prices. Some of them are the same as sold in Caravan accessory shops at twice the price. They have high gain aerials that do not need a booster. Even the medium gain ones might do you without a booster.

I carry a big one that has never let me down even in the middle of nowhere but I have a big van with plenty of storage space. It cost me about £24 but they are even cheaper now. I usually attach it to a telescopic camera stand and plug it in to the external TV/Sat socket on the outside of the van.
