turbo problem

hi all. i run an 89 hymer b544 with a fiat 2.5 turbo. never had a prob with it so far. on thurs eve, i slid it into rear of a poor tiny hatchback....ouch.
since then, my turbo hasn't been kicking in, making it very sluggish. i am guessing that it's probably a vaccuum pipe that's split or come adrift but would welcome any advice before i start pulling things in bits.

If it's intercooled you could have either split the Intercooler  or just knocked a pipe off :)
follow the pipe from Aircleaner to Turbo, checking connections, then from turbo to either intercooler or inlet manifold.....on some Hymers the intercooler is low down on left of radiator and can be a little bit vulnerable :(
DAMHIK:(
IF the Intercooler has split, try and run a direct pipe from Turbo to inlet manifold like the "not intercooled" ones, you'll only lose around 6 bhp then :)

ouch

thanks. the front did get pushed in a little and i had to enlist the aid of a telegraph pole and towing strop to pull it back into place. the cooling rad is intact but it's frame is a little ripped. i will check the intercooler, it's sat right next to it so might have suffered. sounds more likely. watch this space !

544 turbo

The dump valve is quite vulnerable on these , check that the linkage to the servo is not keeping it in the dump position, ( its the rusty little lever you can see when you look directly down onto the top of the turbo.

turbo total lag

hi all. i had a quick look through the letterbox bonnet. it looks like 2 of the vertical columns on the intercooler have been pushed against a bracket on the front of the engine and look damaged. i will have to bite the bullet and get it fixed. hope it can be repaired. im a fabricator / welder so imagine the distress of having someone else mauling it. last resort is source a replacement. i will check out the servo linkage too, just incase. thanks for ideas. i will keep updating until i get it sorted.

Take intercooler off and insert a pipe between inlet and outlet rubber pipes :)
Just bypass it, till you either get it fixed or replaced :)

At least you will still have 85% of your power available then

cheap and cheerful

thanks. with only air passing through the tubes, i was thinking of trying a cheap and cheerful repair using araldite ( have normal, metal and glass types ). the next option was getting it brazed at a garage or lastly getting hold of a replacement. will try a repair at weekend and report back.

eeeeeeeeeeeeha

i took the intercooler off and found the whole of the bottom end was hanging off. a fairly simple repair and the cooling tubes only had tiny puncture so blocked up with araldite. it's so good to have the turbo back. it feels like a racing car now !
thanks for help and advice .....geoff
