I really hope somebody can help.
We are flying to Uk from Austalia in June and want to travel around Europe in a converted Transit Camper.
Only thing is no insurance companies want to talk to us if we dont live in the UK and have UK licences.

any ideas? I am sure there are lots of foreigners that have done the same thing???

How about a company in Oz? They may have experience of this type of problem
Also have a look at the adverts in Time Out and any other Traveller forums you can find

TNT, the Travellers magazine, is also very good - Travel Guides, Travel Deals, Flights, Hostels, Travel Photos, Cheap Travel Deals, Tourist Information - TNT Magazine - TNT Magazine

Adrian Flux may be worth a try as they seem to take on anything - Classic Car Insurance & Specialist Car Insurance | Adrian Flux

btw - Digger, my ACD, sez "G'day"

I have heard of an Australian web-site called something like " Down Under Insurance" This is for Ozzies coming here because we are down under as far as they are concerned.

You will need to do some research around this name but I,m sure it exists.

Hi Sarah,

Try here :- Motor Insurance

We swapped our campervan with a couple from Sydney, they arrive tomorrow for 3 weeks. I thought that I would add him to my insurance but this proved to be impossible as 'Policy holder (and all the proposed drivers) have been continually resident in the UK for the past three years' now appears to be a standard condition.

To help him find insurance I did a quick internet search and found the following
Temporary Motorhome Insurance, Short Term Campervan Insurance - Day Insure (designed to cover you if you are borrowing or hiring a motorhome)
Cheap Caravan Insurance Quotes - Tourer, Static, Campervan, Motorhome
short term motorhome insurance

He got insurance with with Day Insure - paying more for 3 weeks than we do for a year and with £1,000 excess.

I am not sure what difference who own the vehicle makes. Good luck.

The Horizons unlimited website may give a bit of guidance to loads on there that have done what you propose to do.

The Australian Embassy are probably aware of a solution too

Thanks everyone for your help so far. I actually have family in the UK so have an address its just the premiums are crazy high because of the points and australian licences put together!

Also, I found that Down Under Insurance last week but they wont answer their phone! Its a bit worrying.

A few years ago now - but I bought insurance from Tescos online. Nothing about UK licence, although I still have one from the 1970s - expires in 2025. The pain was having to renew the Green Card every month which they are supposed to issue for the period of insurance without any additional charges and cover you for the minimum insurance cover in the country you are visiting.

If I was you go to Germany and buy a van there, no hassles about an overseas address (I have German rego papers with my Australian address on them), drivers licence, etc. ADAC the German equivalent of the RACQ/RACV/NRMA will sell anyone insurance.

If the worst comes to the worst take a set of Aussie number plates and buy Green Card insurance from ADAC online.
