Hi to all thinking of going up west coast in June July any tips on places . And a chilled out route cheers.

Hi and welcome! :welcome:

Where do you want to start? How far up North do you want to go? If I had the time I would start at Oban and work my way up, including Ardnamurchan and Mallaig, sticking to all the small roads. Applecross is a must, as is the road out to Achiltibuie north of Ullapool. There are loads of places to wild camp, but also enough campsites to freshen up every 3/4 days!!

BTW - buy lots of Smidge!!

My route

Head up the A82 alongside Loch lommond and turn left, follow the A83 to Lochgilphead,
Then the B841 to Crinan Canal
B8025 and B816 north to Oban, (take a detour down the b8002 to the Craignish peninsula to the dead end in a car park and see the most amazing views across to the Islands, plus detour No 2 down the B844 over the bridge over the Atlantic to Seil Island).
From Oban head inland on the A85 to tyndrum, meet the A82 again turning left to cross Rannoch moor and along Glen Coe.
Head north to Corran, take the ferry across into the A861, head west along loch Sunart and then North to Mallaig where you get the ferry to Skye.
Enjoy skye and the cross back via the small Skye ferry to Glenelg. Over the hill til you pick up th A87 North via Eilen Donan castle to the Kyle of Lochalsh.
North on to plockton, Lochcarron, over the most amazing high pass to Applecross. make sure you pick up the A832 loop around the rugged coast line.
Once you hit Ullapool you decide to continue north to Durness or head inland and enjoy the Moray firth Dolphins.

Amazing journey, enjoy

I was so impressed with route i have copied and pasted for later this year when i too am traveling in a northerly direction going the west way this time....
Some years ago i went in the opposite direct and enjoyed that so as you can imagine i'm over the moon with your suggestion...cheers Pete..

We did a very brief Scottish tour at the end of last year. Part wild part campsite.

Can recommend an overnight spot at Loch Trool which is really beautiful and not far over the border.

We moved on to Loch Lomond and overnighted in a lay-by (one of them is raised up from the road so the noise from passing traffic in the night is less and you're treated to a beautiful view over the loch in the morning.

We then headed over to Drum Mohr campsite just East of Edinburgh for a couple of nights and went to the Hogmanay celebrations on Princes St which should be on everyone's 'to do' list.

All of the above would be great in summer and a whole lot warmer too !!!!

Enjoy!

isle of Mull a must

Hi to all thinking of going up west coast in June July any tips on places . And a chilled out route cheers.

Hi Steven, for many years I've been going to the isle of Mull (ferry from Oban to Craignure) and there is some fabulous wild camping to be done there. There is a campsite called Fidden campsite which is the Iona end of the island. Google it for more info. It has to be one of the most stunning places to camp. no hookup but apparently good loo's and showers and park on the beach - wonderful!!:D
