Travelling through Portsmouth with vans over 3500kg

I would note that the CAZ in Portsmouth is not to 'save the planet', it's because of local pollution.
Its a generic term, and yes some of the pollutants from ICE vehicles do only affect local urban areas. But I reckon this fine of £220 is way out of proportion to any offence intended or unintended. If their vehicle had been 3.5t or less they could have made their journey without such a draconian fine. My use of the term. Save the planet had nothing to do with the situation in Portsmouth. I was referring to the damage it will do to such campaigns.

I hadn't noticed you posting about 'save the planet', my reply was to Trev, but I do see you posted that it was about a greedy council, in fact the council was forced to introduce the CAZ by central government, and the scheme had to meet central governments approval.

Yes over 60 councils were mandated by the government to introduce CAZs.
But the councils had some control on penalties, and the case given were someone simply uprated a vehicle an additional 350Kg seems heavy handed.
I don't know if their van complied with Euro 6, as I note any vehicles that don't will also be subject to these hefty fines.
I simply posted to assist posters on here, who may not be aware of these fines.

If their van was euro6 then they wouldn't be charged.

Will I have to pay a charge?

It depends which vehicle you drive. Only buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles and heavy goods vehicles (including some Motorhomes which are classed as Private Heavy Goods Vehicles) that are older than Euro 6 if diesel, and Euro 4 if petrol, will be charged.

We are married to our private (mostly oil powered) vehicles with no cheap or easy alternatives widely available.

In short, if governments and big business had been serious about creating a cleaner, greener planet the process of transition should have started yonks ago. But that's for cloud cuckoo land.

Now that climate change is (very recently) mainstream newsworthy, expect payment through the nose for the privilege of driving any private vehicle. Excluded from traveling to or through designated areas of the country, or fined, for driving a vehicle that is placed in some arbitrary category or other, and excluded (for most of the population) from easily transitioning to an 'electric' vehicle as the cost is prohibitive (or they're simply not available) - and that's not counting all the logistic arguments about how far they can travel and how will they be charged etc. etc.

The other elephant in the room is that we don't have an accessible, efficient or affordable wide-reaching public transport system in this country, so a lot of people who might reasonably choose that route to travel about are often fooked on that score too.

Stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea.

Beam me up Scotty. Anybody else want to join me and escape the current transport insanities in th UK?

I read the same article in the CCC Magazine Yesterday it was an IOW resident that got caught worrying for the Islanders that , I drove through Bath recently heading for Bradford on Avon Bee Hive rally missed the emission zone there luckily , but worrisome, Sat Navs will need an option on them to avoid the ZONES as they do Toll Roads , any suggestions ??

Bit i mis is what difference does it make if its a 3.5 or over, most use the same engine, its a big con.

We have it in Bradford City now and part of the corridor into the city, wisely (for now) doesn't affect private vehicles.

I was wrong using this site the van has to pay so thanks for bringing this up Mr Fisherman.

Porstmouth is free for the van though as is Tyneside - Newcastle and Gateshead

Car is free everywhere thankfully.

Zone pciture pretty much says it all I think

i noticed as i came down the M1 the other day between i think sheffield & Rotheram a 10 mile section where the limit is ‘60 for air quality ‘ free flowing traffic suddenly became a rolling roadblock at 55 mph so my transition through this ten miles took 12 mlns instead of 9 mins how on earth does that improve air quality . it’s the same with all these protesters blocking roads to protest pollution so cars are sitting with engines ticking over for hours pumping out even more pollutants,

Our car and MH are both exempt (y)

It's very confusing. If we have to have something like this then surely an annual or life-of-vehicle system like in France or Germany would be simpler?

...but then as mentioned, it wouldn't be as lucrative I guess!

Do you prefer certainty and fairness or luck and unfairness?

My 2002 merc engine is "dirty". :( I inadvertently found myself inside Umwelt Zones in Aachen and Freiburg: my first response was to s%!£ myself at the thought of €80 fines. BUT you only have to pay if they catch you, which requires Herr Plod knocking on your door and waving a cash machine (or machine gun?) at you. So I lived to fight another day, although I suspect some other polluters will have had to pay even as I drove (quickly) through.

In the UK I would have no such luck: transgress across the boundary and the nice ANPR system will send a demand winging my way within a few micro-seconds.

Gordon

When I applied for an Umwelt plaquette at the TUV centre in Lingen I was told that I only qualified for "Red" but "life needs to be lived a little dangerously"; not quite what I expected from a public official responsible for enforcing German law.
