Travel bans

We have spent quite a lot of money on a trip that we planned for June around the Baltic, including a cruise to St Petersburg. I doubt that insurance will pay for much of what we have spent but that's life. My generation (I am 72) has had it good. Among other things, we never had to fight in a war. My parent's generation were robbed of six years thanks to WW2. No doubt there were people complaining about having their holidays ruined by Mr Hitler and I suspect that if there were, they got as much sympathy as the OP. My advice to him is to get out the photo albums and re-live some of the adventures he/she has had to date - and be grateful for them.

It may be worth checking you household contents insurance. I had a letter from Direct Line today to remind me that lost travel may be covered by my policy with them. Amazing service, I’ve been really impressed by them over many years,

Thanks - worth a try. We did take out travel insurance for the trip and it is too early to make a claim because, theoretically, it may still go ahead because lockdowns etc are only announced for a few weeks at a time. But there are plenty of stories out there of insurance companies saying that corona virus is not covered, so I don't know if we'll get any or all of it back when the time comes. But, as I said above, I'd rather be healthy than get the money back.

Had coronavirus started when you took out insurance? I don't see how they can include it retrospectively. Seems more than unfair.

It had started but it was well before the lockdowns started. I'll find out whether they've excluded it when I try to make a claim! :)

I never book anything or pay in advance, all on the day for me.

Probably wise - but our trip was due to be over the summer solstice, when there are lots of celebrations and things get booked up fast. Never mind - another year perhaps :)

You should get most of your money back.
You booked before any FCO advice not to travel. Now FCO say do not travel. Insurance will pay or take them to court or the Ombudsman !
As you say we have been lucky !

Bath maybe !
I am fed up with that shower in House of Commons/government !

The main thing is not to cancel the trip yourself - the companies involved must do it to ensure any possible payout or refund.

We have a campsite booked for Spain in September so just sitting waiting to see whats going to happen. If it looks like getting cancelled I will ask them if they can transfer the deposit to next year instead.
