Transcool Aircon Unit

We have a transcool, had it for around 10 years. Made in Australia for truckers in the outback. It works well in small areas and really only works in the front half of our 7.5 mtr motorhome. It wont cool the whole motorhome. We paid around £270?? when bought , originally bought to keep our bulldogs cool and it did that very well. It is better than the cab aircon in our Fiat though .we never had aircon in our old one

I don't know how long it would work on 12 volts, I assume that's dependent on battery strength,

Well actually it depends on battery capacity which is measured in ampere hours (ah).
The size stated on a battery is the nominal capacity and the battery will only give 50% of this before it is too low to be used.
The formula is
time [in minutes] = (30 x battery capacity[in ah]) / current draw [in amps].
The specification of the device give the current draw as "Low speed 0.7 amps / Medium speed 1.3 amps / High speed 1.7 amps".

So if you have a typical 120 ah battery and use the cooler on high speed, the battery will run it for (30 * 120) / 1.7 = 360/1.7 = 210 minutes or 3 1/2 hours.

I would also point out that the web page says "Transcool (or any other 12v evaporative cooler) will not necessarily cool down an entire room to 'x' degrees like a refrigerated split system air conditioner that requires mains power electricity or engine driven compressors to operate."

The amount of "coldness" an "A/C" produces is related to the power usage.
On max speed this unit uses 21 watts, for comparison the PAC12L – 12000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner mentioned above uses 3500 watts i.e. over 150 times as much!.

My view don't get it.

In a truck it is possible to run it with the engine running and providing the 12v.

Do you use the transcool when travelling or when stationary?

We are only 6m and the last meter is the toilet and shower.

I'm really torn. I don't like the idea of hoses and open windows or cutting holes, so this looked like an option. But I came for advice, and most of that is against it - so, as I always ask myself, why would anyone look for help then disregard it. I'm thinking now the answer is travelling to Europe only in winter!

The cupboard between the fridge and the back cupboard (it's not really a garage) is in the bathroom so it isn't ideal.

But these are all good ideas, thank you
@wildebus [to keep David in the discussion!]. Jo, there is the Gas cupboard venting already cut [David used the vent to get the power cable round the vehicle exterior for the Inverter double socket in the bottom shelf area of the ski/broom cupboard/garage]. If the A/C unit could be mounted in the hab area [no idea of the size], possibly in the underseat gap of about 50cm where the sofa on the passenger side stops, you would have a convenient vent plus a neat cable run and nearby heating ducts that might be capable of being doubled up/extended?

We are 'confined to barracks' for at least the next week or so because of GP & Hospital appointments [Elaine had her angiogram today and has another GP Test on 29th August, and I'm still on 3 times each week dressing changes, but hoping to move to once weekly] so if you want to wander round to see if the installation along these lines might be feasible? We might try to get away for a couple of days between the medical appointments, but there ought to be a date when the stargazing medic doesn't start with, 'Right, let's start with Uranus ...' (y) [and mind where you put that thumb ...]

We use both when driving and parked up.it just plugs in a cigarette socket.

If you're anywhere near ross on wye you can try ours

I’m back in 2 weeks for the BTCC, if your not sorted I’ll look again then

All I can say is that at Oulton Park BTCC in June Transcool as they often do had a trade stand and for once I walked around the trade stands, they were running a number of units off usb power banks and yes they were cooling the air noticeably, BUT I only stood in front of one for a few seconds, I can’t remember the discount but I do remember it was quite a good deal (again a good deal if it works in the way they said it does, not in my opinion, as I don’t have one)
My impression was that they cooled the air noticeably, BUT for how long I have no idea.

At western Motorhome and camper van show today and they have £80 making it £279
