Towing weights

So, is the general consensus that over 70 with a BE license, one can drive a fully loaded 3500kg vehicle pulling a trailer up to the vehicle’s permitted train weight, without the need for any medical?
I believe that over 70 with a BE license one can drive a fully loaded 3500kg PLATED vehicle pulling a BRAKED trailer where the vehicle and fully loaded trailer combined weigh up to the vehicle’s permitted train weight, without the need for any medical.

i.e vehicle max train 5000; MGW 3500; actual 3000 trailer MAM 1500; actual 1000 then you are OK
but vehicle max train 5000; MGW 3500; actual 3000 trailer MAM 2500; actual 1000 then it is no no!

IIRC it was Simon bemoaned that he had to change to a 3.5t vehicle, but could be at the same weight of his C1 motorhome if towing a trailer behind his 3.5t motorhome.

When I hit 70 with no chance of passing a medical I thought that I couldn't tow my Panda anymore so I sold it and bought a Volvo V70, I have discovered since that I was mistaken and I can tow any trailer that my van can tow, in theory I can use my V70 as a toad

There's a first for everything, though Volvo, I'm sure, wouldn't approve!

I suspect not, but you need to refer to the MoHo & Volvo VINs.

You can only tow when the MAM of whole outfit is under the MoHo Max Train Weight.

A typical max train weight on a 3500 MoH kg is 5000 kg

MoHo will be 3500kg

Volvo V70 MAM will be over 2000kg

3500 kg + 2000 kg > 5000 kg.

Thank you but I already knew about MAM and MTW'S, my max train weight is 5200kg but still not enough for towing my Volvo even if I fancied towing something that long, you don't notice Fiat Pandas or 500s

You could always tow the van with the Volvo 😈 I used to regularly tow a 7m trailer with a 760, never been over the gtw honest guv, that same trailer brought a DH87 back from Shetland behind a stretched Volvo. 😝

No, nothing to do with the plated weight, it's the physical weight, if the 3.5t plated weight is actually (unlikely) only say 2t then in theory if his licence allows he can tow up to 1.5t
I'm just about certain that you are wrong. The C1 is needed to drive vehicles with a max GVW of more than 3500KG, whetever their actual weight atbthe time. The train max weight and the actual.train weight can be higher than 3500kg

It has happened before, but again the licence rules first, then the vehicle.
