TomTom xxl versus Garmin Nuvi 2445LMT

I’ve only used a Satellite Navigation system once and that took me over a toll bridge so I had to pay for the privilege, maybe it was my fault. I didn’t know at the time how to set one to avoid toll roads and toll bridges, costly lesson learn't I reckon.

In all my years of driving I have never felt the need to buy one, the two lady passengers that have accompanied me in those four years I’ve owned a mobile Home have done a good job. The lady I’m with now is a wiz at map reading, she is that good I have made her my fiancé..lol. But nevertheless the other day I bought one.

I went to our local Halfords store but came away empty handed, again it was my fault.
I went with the impression that the model I was after [XXL] came with life time up-dates.
When the assistant was challenged on this they couldn’t reassure me either way, was told the computer system was down thereby not letting them in to check my inquiry out.

Once home I re-read the data and discovered that again I was wrong.
Map Up-dates and safety camera up-dates were extra, not for me then.
As I was checking this on Amazon it was mentioned in several reviews that I hadn’t read, that the Tom Tom xxl was somewhat of a let down, memory storage was small with no slot for memory upgrade. It was suggested that I ought to have a look at the Garmin Nuvi 2445LMT at roughly the same price and functions and a bigger memory which meant Western mapping was in full unlike the TomTom whereby the memory would only allow you to load two countries at any one time.
In truth I’ve saved some money, ordering it through Amazon I have paid ten pounds less than what was the asking price of the TomTom xxl… £99.99p

Any opinions are welcome.

I would have thought I might have had one or two replies to this but hay ho I have got one now without help.
What swayed me towards the Garmin is the full European mapping.
The Tom Tom you couldn’t load all the countries at once only two at a time and to do so you would need a computer to do it, not much use when travelling through more than one country without access to a lap top.

The 2 best things we have ever got are the garmin sat nave and the book camperstop. My wife is great at map reading but now she can see the scenery and she never picks up a map now. The garmin with ALL of europe, and free up dates is now at halfords for £119 a great buy. Buy the downloads from camperstop i think it is about 3 euros a country put into your garmin, this gives you all the camp sites push the button get the page number look to see if it is free or not if you like the look of it push the button and it takes you there , no need for a map. Last year we spent 7 weeks in france never payed a euro rof toles or camp sites, put in to your garmin no tolls or what ever you wont. :drive: :drive:

I don't think that members don't have an opinion about the relative merits of their sat navs but we are normally biased in favour of the ones we have/know/get used to.

Both Garmin and TomTom are fine devices! Once you get into specific models, lifetime map updates and so on it becomes very subjective.

fairytooth youd be the man to ask so here goes we... have a navman yrs old cant update it i don t think...
if you were me but with your expertise which would you buy or what is the best device for the money ???? never used either or much experience we got this from angies dad after he past away

hmmmm little over 10 mins little tardy in my book ....its your first strike so two more to go... room for improvement but im sure youll get better with just a little more effort

My have mentioned this before in an earlier post.
By the way thanks for the replies I was thinking for a bit I was being ignored.

On the 11th MARCH I ordered a Garmin from Amazon, they gave me a delivery date of the 18th. By the twentieth nothing had arrived so contacted Amazon to ask where had the Bleedy thing got to. Was told to give more time and so I did, by the 25th still nothing.
Contacted Amazon again and they sent me a replacement saying how sorry they were for the delay. On the 26th March post lady tries to deliver two, yes both have come on the same day. I had popped out for an hour so nobody was in, card through door telling me give it 24 hours to collect from local Royal Mail depot.
Yesterday collected both and when I got back home printed out a returns free postage label…..the end..

When ever anyone wants a satnav it's always Tom Tom or Garmin, for a £25 I got a satnav from hong kong off ebay, very easy to use good clear graphics, was well happy with. The daughter pinched that on off me when she went to uni, so I got another with a bigger screen and european mapping because we were going to Italy, for £35 I got a brilliant bit of kit, had them 4 and 3 year now and both still working great, wouldn't even look at the other 2 brands if I was after another.
