TomTom VS Garmin SatNav

I`m looking for a new SatNav, I have a TomTom at the moment which I have had for about 8 years, it wont update anymore, keeps crashing and needs rebooting all the time. I was going to get another TomTom but but after a some of searches on the forum it looks like the TomTom has had problems uploading the POI`s and the Garmin is the favorite. I was going to buy the Garmin nuvi 2597LM 5" from Halfords, and they have a Trade In Your Old SATNAV deal at the moment that gives 20% off, So, just wondering if this one would be a good choice for the MH, use would be mainly in the UK with the chance of venture over the channel. Cheers Johnny.

PS. I would prefer local as in halfords or argos as I`m collecting the new van on Friday,

I've been using Garmin SatNavs for several years and have no complaints. That's a good price with the trade-in. POI installation quite easy if you follow the instructions.

Cheers for that Steve, I looked at more sophisticated models with rear cameras ect but just sound gimicky

The Garmin 760 Camper can be bought at a reduced price if you shop around. They have brought out a newer model (770) and the old one will be just as good and has the option of linking to a rear view camera.

Which model of tomtom is it?, I hear all the time of problems with tomtom but the problem is usually you not the satnav, I mean that nicely of course

I don't know if it's still for sale but, fairytooth has a Tom tom Truck for sale quite reasonably priced. Give him a PM and see if he has anything to suit your needs.

Regards Rog.

ive a garmin 2598 which i recently updated the soft ware on it and was pleased to see a facility to fit a garmin rear view camera untill i saw the price of it

The battery must be gassed as it only keeps the charge for about 10 mins, also the socket for the power supply must have a dry joint or crack in the pcb, as it crashes cos of loss of power then you have to reset it. computer does not see it for an update, prob because of the bad socket connection. PS. its a TomTom GO I think,

I've got the Garmin 760 Camper (£200 from Aldi earlier this year) and have just installed the dedicated wireless reversing camera. I certainly wouldn't call it a gimmick, as I have a massive blind area due to the large square body of my MH so had to rely solely on my door mirrors when reversing. The camera makes reversing significantly safer as it allows me to see from the roofline to back doors of vehicle, and several feet to the sides.

I recently purchased a TomTom GO 6000 from Halfords. Had it for 28 days managed to load 21 POI's but for unknown reasons the next 14 failed to load. I still have an open and active case ongoing with TomTom support but they have been unable to resolve the issue. I was obviously doing everything correctly as the first 21 poi's imported with no problem and no one in TomTom Tech support has any ideas how to get the next 14 POI's across. As a Satnav I liked it's look and feel and functionality, but it's no use to me if it won't easily load POI's (not to mention the frustration dealing with their tech support for 12 days) so I took it back for a refund.

I am now the happy owner of a Garmin Camper 760LMT-D satnav and I have to say I am incredibly impressed with it as a satnav and I loaded all 35 of my POI's within 15 minutes once I was ready for the import. I purchased it from Halfords for £245 as they were happy to match the price from HDEW Cameras Garmin Camper 760LMT-D

It's a superb piece of kit and I would highly recommend.

We've used TomTom Navigator 5 for some years, but they stopped supporting it in 2007 so the maps got more and more out of date, and they seem to have a habit of this on later stuff too.

While in the USA earlier this year I picked up a Samsung Galaxy Tab4 8" and bought the Sygic app for satnav. The Galaxy has GPS and we have used it on our recent 3-week trip to Holland and France, with the TomTom as backup.

No problems at all, it worked very well, apart from my not downloading the Luxembourg map, which was a bit embarassing!

Happy to recommend it, saves carrying a tablet AND a satnav.

If it is for sale let me know

Thanks for the advice folks, its a pity the TomTom is not so good for the POI`s as I really liked TomTom, and I think going by what I have read its a better system, I`m gonna get the Garmin nuvi 2597LM 5" only £95.99 with my old satnav, the camper version sounded nice too but £200 more was a bit steep for me. Full Membership and an POI upload next, Cheers folks.

Have you tried the free ones?

Hope this isn't too late...

For several years I used PC Navigator on an old netbook. Recently I've downloaded the equivalent onto my android phone - check out Mapfactor Navigator on the google play site.

Gives the option of using the free maps or paying 49 Euros for the TomTom Europe maps.

I'm happy with it...
