Toll roads in portugal

Ahhh...we crossed border not on A22...which is maybe why we saw nothing !! That's a good map though... Maja

What are you registering for "at the border" ....if you then still have to "avoid the toll roads" Oh, then you say "it's only a small amount" but then say "we try to avoid toll roads as expensive". EH ???? Very confusing LOL !! When traveling into the Algarve from Cadiz saw no signs for "registering" so what's that about ? Just drove to Albufeira (our fave...don't you just love the flutists in main square!!) Saw nothing about...well anything really. Maja

Just after where you cross into Portugal from Spain in the south, think it was near or on the A22 there is a pull in for foreign vehicles, it is not a huge sign - blink and you would miss it. You stop at the machine the machine takes a photo of your reg and you insert a payment card. Now, when you use the electronic tolls your payment card is automatically charged. This arrangement is valid for one month.

Small charge - as in if your toll amount was not very much then it is possible it isn't worth the admin to come after you. We spend quite a while in Portugal, travelling a good distance, not just small hops from one place to another so the toll roads, if we used them, would be expensive.

I'm getting a bit confused now, I thought if I registered at the border then I could just jolly and the ANPR cameras would then do the rest and I'd pay on my way back across the Border?

That's correct, though the border has nothing to do with it.

Any charges incurred are billed to your credit card. This makes it even more important that you have a low cost card such as Halifax Clarity otherwise your toll charges will be much dearer.

Toll roads in Portugal

We are off to Portugal in June, a friend in work has just come back from there on his motorbike and although he didn't use the toll roads he got talking to another biker who said something on the lines of some of the toll roads are tag only and be careful not to get stuck on them.
Is this true ?
Thanks
D

Spent a few weeks there recently and paid no tolls on the few motorways we used. Local wisdom suggested that their system is not geared to recognise foreign number plates. We encountered no aggro and there has been no comeback.
I guess you have to make up your own mind on this one.
As an aside, why use motorways ? See the country from the back roads !

I don't really aim to use them but Dont mind if it gets me somewhere I want to get to quicker.
I just don't want any fecking about etc.
Cheers

Fecking about..

Agreed, we actually went quite a few miles....probably 4 sets of cameras 🎥 but not expecting any comeback despite the doomsday scenario suggested above !!! As just said the occasional toll to get somewhere quickly....or it can be economical verses the wear and tear...is worth it. Mostly they are a rip off and, as also said, not necessary when pootling along from A to B.... In Spain you can see the justification for some of their tolls as they involve massive tunnels/bridges and shorten route considerably...but other toll roads are just....errr...money makers and for no other reason. Oh, and what's the use if you can "miss the sign in a blink of an eye".....and, if only on one route into a country....I rest my case LOL :mad2:

......big or small...what if you enter via a different route ? Maja
