Last year I really enjoyed Alsace and got close to the border at Mulhouse but never " went over".

Just a few tips would be helpful ( not looking for full itinerary)

We like the Mosel area, can get a bit busy esp. right next to the river.

p.s. We drove through Hamburg this year on way back from Scandinavia, not something I'd want to repeat, nightmare with traffic due to roadworks which are scheduled to continue for years.
 
We have stayed on several good stellplatz (aires) in Germany. I also like the Mosel, and the Rhine, but the Rhine has train lines on both sides so can be a bit noisy on parts of it. We stopped in Braubach for example, a lovely place, but freight trains ran every 15 minutes all night.

The tourist info website lists about 100 pretty driving routes. We did the Romantische Straße a couple of years ago, it was lovely.

if you use Organic Maps or Maps.me, I can send you files of the stops we made - I've bookmarked the stellplatz in all the towns we visited.

Germany is Good stellplatz not as rural as French Aires but well kept and PAYG EHU available maybe 2 euros. Usually paved and clean/tidy. Rural sites are to be found. 😄😁
 
I think Germany is as good, maybe even better for exploring than France. Same rules, use M ways to get from A > B quickly then avoid them and explore the small towns and countryside.
As already mentioned, I think the Mosel area is great, say from Trier upwards. If you do use campsites, the chances are they will only take cash, but there are plenty of Stellplatz and other places where you can overnight.
Well worth popping over to old east Germany too if you have time, Saxon Switzerland National Park is worth a visit, but like the Mosel it can get very busy in holiday season. The rest of the east is far less busy.

Bavaria and the lakes north of Fussen are fabulous. Black Forest is also good. Titasee (fond memories from my first ever Euro Trip at 15). Bit touristy but worth a visit.

 
We visit Germany frequently and the Mosel definitely gets busy during the holiday season but there are lots of stellplatz and lots of weinguts to stock up with good German wine, as barryd says the lakes are a good area to explore, Koningseee is worth visiting and going on a boat trip, Fussen gets really busy with people visiting Neuschwanstein but it's worth visiting, the Alpine Strasse is a good route with plenty of places to stop.
 
One of the best tours we did was the Romantic Rosd north to South ending in Fusen and the Castles of mad king Ludwig Ii. All the towns have stellplaz handy. One tip a couple of the places (particularly Rothenburg OT) are tourist hotspots. The tip that served us well was arrive at the stelplaz (just outside the walls) late afternoon and walk into town in the evening after the day trippers have left.

 
Germany (and other countries too) have an abundance of 30kmh (19mph) speed limits - and the speed cameras have extremely bright blinding flashes when you pass by at 41kmh (25mph)

As a tip, take more cash then you would normally as we have found Germany to be less credit card friendly than other countries.

Aside from that go there, it's a great place to tour.

Oh and do get into the Kaffee und Kuchen German culture...and maybe then skip lunch :)

Oh yes! Always worth a visit. It is actually in Switzerland though but a short hop from the black forest. You used to be able to park overnight there. Not sure now. Also just down from the falls a short walk there is a bridge and if your brave you can swim in the fast flowing deep water there or dive off the bridge. Lovely on a hot day. Mind you don't get swept down to Germany though.

The cash tip was good, although I seldom use my card abroad.
I won't be going near Switzerland as my van doesn't like big hills.
Will definitely look at the moselle and bits near France.

The war? Which war. Didn't we win both of them?
