Hi Dogmanlpool

Get a SOG kit you will never use chemicals again and can empty in any toilet or cess pit. Cost about £90.00 can fit yourself very easily.

toilet

Hi Dogmanlpool
I use a thing called a SOG its German it works by a 12 volts little fan that when you open the toilet the fan starts so no bad air comes out in fact by air going into toilet it means you don’t need to have any chemical at all, it breaks down everything, I hope you know what I mean , it’s good for the pocket and also the environment, look it up on the net and see if you like it , it cost me about £100 but it soon pays for itself, I would recommend it to all my friends.

SOG without a doubt. Works really well and 'cos it costs nothing to empty you're not tempted to give it 'one more day' and get caught short...

I got a gallon of travela kem at the peterborough show, dirt cheap and works as well as the ordinary blue. Don,t put it in a cesspit. Main sewage or elsan only, elsan being better as it kills natural bacteria which breaks down the sewage. If Vwalan was on he would tell to use a spoonful of vinigar and never empty your loo totaly to keep a healthy culture growing. I have never tried it.

Looking at the SOG website I'd think that anyone with a bit of ingenuity could quite easily make one of these devices himself. A computer case fan is only a fiver some pipe the same price etc... £90 odd quid seems a lot of money for such a simple ready made kit.

hi, tbear said it so i dont need to. mine never gets washed out . i shall be away next week for 6months just use it . not too much water and never empty it properly. use normal toilet paper . i dont have a cassette just an old fashioned thetford porta potty 365. never used chemicals just a splash of vinegar. . the chemicals may help it get liquid but dont help nature disintegrate the waste, in fact they make it take longer to breakdown properly. have a nice day . i can talk s---e all night. anybody know anything about a frames much nicer subject. or gas bottle filling adaptors .haa haaa. cheers

The only small problem I can see is the saddle connection at the cassette emptying/filler pipe but a domestic item @ B and Q may fit. I think SOGS have a charcoal filter but this could be made optional on DIY set up.
I've recently used computer fans (£15) to replace defunct Fiamma rooflight vent fans, had to make a mounting plate but it saved having to buy new vent and fit.

costs you nothing to try it. will take awhile for the good bacteria to form. if you have used chemicals give it a good clean out and go and drop one in it tommorow . dont pee in it too much. just leave it to get working. let nature do its course . in cesspits they chuck dead sheep in them thats riddled in maggots .may i sugest a small child is ideal in a cassette. i,m off before they come and get me .haaa haa. but let it build up bacteria. visit a local sewage works and have a word with the staff . they work with it every day. i used to drive and work with our local water company . as an agency driver . ..no i didnt drive aluminium sulphate lorries but have been to that same site. taking away aluminium sludge . not delivering. was very interesting work. i did fresh water and sewage sites . one of the nicest jobs i,ve had . lots to see and learn. specially their gas burning engines driving big generators to power the grid. my neigbour used to build the set up. all high tec but easy to understand with a bit of time and thought. i do get obsesed with my work no mtter what it is .if i dont like it i leave. have fun cheers alan. soon be time . whooooopeeee. i,m fluent in spanish .dos cervaises ,por favor . thats it ,all you need . cheers alan.

It`s right what they say Alan. You get dafter as you get older. Have a good trip, we will miss you.

Back on subject. I have a SOG but I put a bit of cheap bio washing liquid in the cassette (cannot afford vinegar, Alan nicks his from the chip shop). Belt and braces as the SOG can pong when you are emptying it. Also, if your cassette exhaust is close to another van, it is not pleasant for them when the fan is running.:D:D

always been daft, nothing new there.
any way main-spring when are you going to join our friendly bunch of daft folk for the winter . i,m sure you would have lots of fun . you could use your arab experiances to your advantage . in maroc most speak berber that could confuse you. no rhials just dirhams . go on you know you want to. even bironic misses it really . there ,s lots from the site get there . cheers alan.

Hi Alan,

I have been to a lot of places but I normally got paid to go there. I am now retired and my passport has lapsed. I could not take the dogs anway (could not afford it).

I have not been to Morocco and I am quite content to stick at 60 countries visited. Deported from Algeria at gunpoint, never got out of the airport but it still counts.;)

know the feeling . we have driven out into algeria in the desert ,had the military come out to us . we say we think we are still in maroc .we didnt see a border . they then escort us back to the invisible border . all part of the adventure. in fact you know where you are when you cross a road. but just pretend you didnt know. really amazing out miles from nowhere and nothing but the floor of the desert .theres places where youcan pick up fossilized coral and sea shells etc from when it was under the sea . and crystals just under the surface. . hard to believe it was under the sea. cheers alan.

Just look at Michelin map 969 most of what should be the frontier between Maroc and Algeria is missing as I also found to my cost many years ago.
Hey what's all this about "even byronic" yes it would be true to say Maroc has lost much of its appeal for me, possibly an age thing. I got to know Maroc quite well when visitng frequently whilst living in Gib. But I think the "Eastern Magic" largely went when holiday institutions such as Club 18 30 established itself on the Fna el Jmaa in Marrakech.
Nowadays the main reason I would go to Maroc would be if the Spain/Portugal winter compels me to.
Actually Alan most Moroccans speak Moroccan Arabic and Standard Arabic, it's a large minority that speak Berber and they are found generally in the mountain regions.

Can't pass this thread by without adding my ten pen'orth.

I have been using the cheapest supermarket own brand biological washing tablets in my cassette for a long time now ( don't use non-bio ). Chuck in 1 or 2 with a pint of water when you do your cassette and they break down the yucky stuff and keep it smelling sweet, including normal toilet paper, and you can empty it anywhere as there's nothing in there that you would not put down your sewer system at home.

They also cost about a third of the price of conventional toilet chemicals and are available anywhere. You can also use them in your flush tank and your grey waste tank, saves having several different chemicals on board.

Hey vwalan, you know those gas burning engines you saw? well I used to machine the engine blocks for them in my last job. Just a nice size for your truck, a 91 litre V18 with the most humoungous spark plugs you've ever seen, about 2500 horsepower at 950rpm. We used to send them all over the place to have the genny's put on them and sometimes they were built as a complete package in a shipping container. Drop it on site, plug it in, job done!

hi, randonneur quite nice bits of kit those . its a small world . amazed me that so much of this as ben going on for a long time.none of it is really new. just someone pretends its new and makes a programme for the telly etc . all interesting stuff. cheers alan. by the way my truck is no bigger really in the cab than yours . its only a little canter. uses a 3.9 turbo. diesel. with intercooler. 140 bhp.

There's another option that hasn't been mentioned - brewer's yeast.

With acknowledgment to another website (www.liloontheweb.org.uk) talking about toilets on boats:

Yeast - brewer's yeast tablets from your local health food store (has anyone tried baking yeast?). If you're using a porta-potti then yeast tablets seem to be the cheapest and greenest way to go. There have been lots of reports of people using yeast to neutralise odours from your port-a-potti/tank. Just put 4 tablets after emptying the cassette and let it do its job. Take care to flush your tank/port-a-potti thoroughly to try and get as much of the blue out as possible - even then it can take a few fillings and emptyings before the yeast begins to work properly - up to six weeks - so be patient!

I have tried this on a narrow boat with holding tank with some success ...

Hi canalsman,

There seems to be no difference between brewers yeast and bakers yeast.

I used to make my own wine in Saudi (easy peasy in those temperatures). It was all highly illegal. There was no brewers yeast allowed in the country but bakers was deemed harmless. :D:D

It worked well for me. :D
