I've googled them now and can't believe I got to my age without knowing that barnacles were living creatures

No wonder you can't find them in pet shops, they are considered a delicacy in Rural Iberia.
Try the butchers shop, but go early in the day. Those little , "Black Grannies ", snaffle them.
Same with sweetbreads.
Wasted on dogs, IMHO.

I blame the lunchtime G&Ts... They might have disabled my subtlety detector..

They certainly disabled my urge to do any gardening.
