The North Coast 500

Well worth a visit to the Coigach peninsula if you like space, unspoiled places and views like something out of Lord of the rings...

Largely very quiet and unvisited...

One of my favourites. The views over the Summer Isles are breathtaking. The road round the end of pininsula is a bit narrow and a lovely park up at Polbain which will most certainly be fenced off now. The road up to Inverkirkaig has to be driven, it’s a bit tight but what a drive.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread, it's been encouraging and informative. By coincidence I met two women at the Great Yorkshire Show this week who had just completed the 500 and they confirmed what most of you have said; they had a great time and said I should't worry about it and just do it! Cheers everyone.

I did this route back in September 2015, before it became a 'thing' and had a wonderful trip with total solitude over night at places like Dunnet Head and the Grey Cairns of Camster. I want to go to Orkney from Scrabster next year but have been put off by the reports of trouble, overcrowding, poor behaviour and even attempts to force motorhomes off the road! Does anyone have up to date experience, that hasn't been processed through the media, that might reassure me?
We have just come back from 3 weeks in Orkney and Shetland. We had a fantastic time - everyone was kind and considerate and there are loads of council campsites and park ups that are well used but not overcrowded. We had no bad experiences. The Ring of Brodgar has a car park (don’t park in the coach spaces) and once the evening comes the light makes the stones magical. Lots of honesty boxes too. We used search for sites very successfully for all our camping, wild and sites. Kirkwall has a site called the Picaquoy centre who let non residents empty black and waste and fill with fresh for £5. Go for it - you’ll love it! Same as many have said, play by the rules and nobody will give you grief. Clear up and leave nothing behind and nobody minds. The scaremongers just don't want others to enjoy it ;)
