Newhaven - Dieppe ferry route grants spark £125m lawsuit
Brittany Ferries says grants DFDS receives to run its Newhaven-Dieppe route has cost it £125m.

The subsidy is paid by Dieppe Chamber of Commerce, and one of the reasons for having to phone to book is that the subsidy element is on a different system. The subsidy was given to support employment in both Ports and would have been permissible under the Job Creation/Protection for Economically Deprived Regions. This route has been threatened with closure for some time and, apparently, only survives because of French Government subsidies. As we are no longer in the EU, and therefore not subject to their rules regarding subsidies, I hope that this law suit fails. I use this route regularly, and compared with the chaos at Dover, there are few delays at customs and passport control with the added bonus of arriving at the delightful port of Dieppe. Contrary to Brittany Ferries' contention that DFDS is unfairly attracting business, especially commercial, in my experience the route is underused. For example, I returned to Newhaven on the overnight ferry on 2nd June and I counted only two artics loading. It would be a shame if Brittany Ferries, an over-priced and monopolistic company, wins as I am sure it will be the death of this route.
There was a ferry company got shut down a few years ago , can't think of the name . Always cheaper than the other companies. Think they were owned (subsidiary) of the eurotunnel? This route has been threatened with closure for some time and, apparently, only survives because of French Government subsidies. Was there during herring festival couple of years ago . Though was parked in the main aire .We absolutely love Dieppe, what a welcoming place for motorhomers. We were there last November, when the three day herring festival was on. The council opened up the racetrack for motorhomers to park, then they organised buses from the racetrack track to the centre, running all day long. All of this was free!! I would recommend anyone to attend the herring and scallops it is amazing how many places are barbecuing herring, it was a really good three days, because all of this was free we spent a fair bit in the town, as a small payback. They also do the same for the world kite championship in September
