Some nice motorist has managed to smash the numberplate on my van. I'm sure it is necessary to take your documents with you to get a new one made and Halfords want £15.99 for this service. A new numberplate bought on line for £6.20 with no questions asked. I appreciate this could encourage cloning, but hey for a third of the price I'm not complaining.

It will probably say somewhere on the web page that the plates are for show use only and will they have the postcode of the supplier on them ? Probably not but has any one ever been stopped and fined for this, perhaps a information request to the police to find out !

I would think that somewhere in the small print it will more than likely say they are show plates. So no laws flouted.

I got mine this morning and they have a name and postcode on them. They were bought through a well known auction site and the page describes them as UK Law Compliant. I can't see any difference between the old and the new .

Not sure which law could stop anyone printing/making any number plate ? Using the wrong number plate would be illegal

I had a rear plate made up for my trailer by an on line company. I also had a plate made up with our names on it which we use to save our pitch on sites. Total cost for both was less than Halford for a single plate.

I see that but if you made a number plate [piece of metal , correct paint , numbers etc] whilst not registering [or advertising] as a number plate supplier , what they going to charge you with ? Merely curious

You are required to keep a register for inspection of any plate supplied. This has to have the name and address and vehicle reg. It also has to show the documents have been verified ie V5 to show proof of entitlement plus driving licence number, passport number to verify the identity of the person requesting the plate. This law was brought in to prevent number plate cloning and many caravan accessory shops stopped selling stick-on plates and stick-on numbers as a result.

From the link it mentions up to £5000 fine for not registering, £2500 for failing to meet British Standards and £1000 for not keeping proper records or failure to inform of changes.

I got stopped a few years ago for having mis-spaced lettering, it was, and the traffic cop said you must also have the kite mark on your number plates, I asked him what he meant so he took me to his patrol car to show me his kite marked number plate, no kite mark, get your plates changed he muttered as he got back in the patrol car.

Prices vary for a variety of reasons. Main one being the overheads of having a prime unit on a retail park to someone in a shed at the bottom of the garden. They both work for different people. However i have a little story that i hope i have not posted before were a friend of mine lost his front number plate in a snow drift and with the relevant document had another made up at our local store. On its third M.O.T after the event the examiner made a note of the registration off the plate on the front then walked to the rear to check and this was a different number. So nobodies perfect.

I get my number plates from the local HGV spares people, they have dealt with me for years since, when I had a few trucks to care for. They put the details on a keyboard and out comes a sticky strip which they then press onto the plastic face, £4.00 each, long or square.
The other regulation like this is the scrap yards where they are supposed to take all your details and reg etc to buy scrap. However the fall down on this idea is the P+++y fraternity who are the one nicking the lead etc are the cousin/brother in law/ uncle etc, of the owner so it actually stop nothing.,
