How long is it since you drove in the UK? What you say used to be true 30 odd years ago, but not today in my experience.

UK drivers are often very reluctant to overtake unless on a dual carriageway. Even driving a small car, moving over to the left & signalling left turn on a long straight, cars behind will often just stay behind. It's as tho overtaking has become, like smoking, a socially unacceptable activity for many.

When they do overtake, they do not change gear but simply pull out in top & slowly draw alongside & eventually ahead with very little speed differential. Perhaps overtaking is not taught in the driving test?

Can't agree too much. I think it's to do with the excessive amount of solid white lines. Easiest example I can think of is heading North out of Skipton. Might just be warranted for the smallest of cars but negates M/Cs or vans having a better view.

Also those who overtake when the opportunity occurs just for themselves. Just about edge past and forget that the gap was big enough for several others if they had got on with it. No I don't overtake as part of a train of vehicles, not that silly.

Don't bother to learn the skills though and Alan I'm sorry to dissapoint you, you wont be holding up vehicles for long. Now local authorities can change the speed limits on A roads we have the phenomenon of the plunging speed limit. A few years ago the A580 coming out of Manchester (A dual carriageway with armco) was reduced to 50 mph. I went along it on Tuesday there is now an 8 or 9 mile stretch that is 40mph. Bring on the man with the red flag.
Speed dosent cause accidents bad driving does. Yes speed increases the kinnetic energy so if I add 42% to my speed my physical braking distance is doubled and yes if i hit something faster the damage is greater but speed doesn't cause accidents. Governments are good at simple messages, it doesn't make them true.

Smaug This thread about driving is proving quite popular, whatever happened to the "Guidelines For Numpties" thread.

I hope this is a joke about not pulling in. I only pull a modest trailer and there are times it's rude not to. Not certain about over 7.5 Tonne vehicles stuck at 40. If we want them to have a lower speed limit then we have to live with it.

movement ie speed is the cause. if we didnt move nothing would crash .

Very true and so technically the guy on a M/C plodding around a roundabout in ice did have a speed related incident when he fell off. Also because he had some abrasions that were cleaned up in hospital. It resulted in serious injuries.
Both are sort of true though not what any one would assume was meant by a speed related incident resulting in serious injuries.
