Can anyone recommend a good insect / mosquito repellent for when we visit The Camargue ?

Got some pretty nasty Tiger Mosquito bites ( still got the scars ) around the Vias-Plage area which isn`t a million miles from there a couple of years back :scared:

i have severe reactions to insects.... and have been hospitalised more than once because of them. last year in Eire and Scotland i adopted a 3 pronged attack..... Avon skin so soft (put on before leaving the van/opening the windows) take piriton tablets both before a long walk and after a bite, and apply cream immediately to the site where i got bitten. it didn't stop me getting bitten (although not as much as i would have done without all that) but the after-effects were minimal.

Hi Colette, we had Avon skin so soft on and i foolishly thought that would help protect us ................. WRONG ............... :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared:

I couldn`t have got it more wrong if i`d tried :scared: so this time i was wondering if any of our members that had been down there had experience.

If you can miss Summer and Autumn thats the worst time for mossys .We where there in July and had no problems. Witch hazel or citronella based sprays are good .Deet based sprays are also recommended but has a bad press.

We have 3 Citronella candles for out side one on the table and 2 on the floor underneath (mind you dont kick them over) on the basis that the smell keeps them off your legs/ankles .

My understanding is the formula for Skin so soft has been changed so perhaps a myth nowadays.

Deet Jungle formula, Citronella candles as others have mentioned. The good news is the Carmargue can be quite breezy that keeps them away, especially the coast.

A friend of mine has just come back from Thailand, he'd been tipped off to try Vicks Vapour Rub and it worked for him. He forgot at first but applied after he'd been bitten and said as well as preventing further bites it soothed the few bites he'd already got really quickly. Haven't tried it myself but it's in the van ready to try!

From what I have read Andy, you have to get the right one.

Avon skin so soft dry oil body spray still contains Citronella which is what the critters don't like.

There are indeed two different types of Avon's SSS ...... i also burn citronella candles in the evening - i got mine in an Irish pound shop.... 8 in a box .... they smell nice too.

We still have some of the old Avon SSS left from a bulk buy i got a few years back at a ridiculously low price

It works very very well in Scotland but was little better than useless against anything in France.

I`m not prepared to use anything that contains DEET because the wife has a very nasty reaction to it.

Try eating more garlic, ok ok I'm waiting for the jokes, :) some people seem to smell more appealing to the little blighters, me being one of them, so garlic helps a bit, and I smother myself in lavender perfume, which seems to help. I think I'll try Allans idea of the Vicks, it couldn't smell any worse than the garlic and lavender lol.

I did the same Graham. Got loads of the stuff.

Here's what worked in Central America for mozzies, and in Highlands for midges.
Firstly, keep covered, use mozzieguard clothing or treat clothing with peritherin.
Treat window and door mesh with peritherin.
I you don't like DEET, use ecoguard extreme which contains Saltidin at 20%.

I found this No Fleas On Me spray, and I spray both myself and my dogs with it. It has a pleasant fragrance and neither my dogs or myself have had a bite when using it.

As @delicagirl says - take prophylactic anti-histamine tablets daily.

They don't stop you getting bitten, but they reduce the itching when you do.

.

I believe that the formula was changed about 2 years ago and that the new stuff is no where near as effective
