Recently aquired the above van and was wondering if anyone has advice on the following.
The van had stood idle for 12 months when I bought it ,so sounded a bit rough on initial start up (to be expected) however drove 140 miles home and the engine seems to be spot on, it also starts first time every time.
The problem is ,I get engine vibration at about 1000 rpm, when cold, even though it runs near perfect on higher revs. and on tickover.
All suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advice,, Lenny

Hi Lenny. Don't know how much mechanical experience you have, so if I'm teaching granny to suck eggs please excuse me

Although I've been around the motor trade a while, I am not all that famillier with the talbot, so the points made are general not specific.

Firstly with any vehicle thats been laid up for a while, a really through service and "going over" is essential before you use it regularly and don't rely on the MOT as a guarantee, it really is only a very brief look at general roadworthyness. Any part that could , wear, perish or corrode should be inspected and replaced, cleaned or lubricated as necessary.

As for the vibration I would think it's caused by a misfire. A good engine service, oil, filters, plugs, leads, dis. cap & rotor arm, plus checking the tappets, should sort it out, if not and it persists or gets worse,a compression test is probably worth while. It's easier to have the head off at home than at the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. (Although I did once do a head gasket on the campsite in Glen Nevis)

Picking up on your other post about running an older camper, I would suggest that if you aren't all that mechanically knowlegable try and learn what you can of the basics, and try and learn as much as you can about your own vehicle, you will often find that with a little know how you can perform a 10min repair and save yourself a long wait for recovery or even a spoilt holiday.

Best of luck with your project and I hope I haven't scared you to much, sounds worse than it really is.

thats exelent advice geoff, i dont think lenny will go far wrong if he follows what you said.

Thanks Geoff for the kind response, I am in the process of replacing all you have mentioned, but I have a feeling its to do with the advance- retard carry on, (I'm researching this at the moment).

Maybe I'm just nit picking,Anyway I just Fixed the sloppy gear linkage and it did'nt cost a penny, just a bit initiative and a lot of deep thought.

:Thanks again...Lenny

at least thats one thing with our older motors, you can get your hands on it and repair them unlike the new stuff . when it dont run its of to the dealers and a whopping bill :eek:.
