i am traveling in a small camper van solo - and hope to learn about locations to stay for a few nights - then move on - i am most interested in scenery and privacy - are there any suggestions of unique places in either switzerland or austria that somebody might have camped at in mini van that you would suggest?

Location App (top of page, 4th tab) is what you need.
Thnx for help Boris - "Location App (top of page, 4th tab) is what you need" - what does this help me with - i'll check it out - thnx man

When we last went to Austria I joined an Austrian motorhome forum. Lot of years ago now. They were quite helpful. Austria had some half decent stellplatz / Aires, Switzerland not so much and wilding wasnt so easy but probably would be in a small camper van. I would focus on what you want to see and where you want to go rather than where to stay first. Both countries are stunning.

If looking at aires/Stellplatz rather than wilding, CCI has good coverage of aires in Switzerland and reasonable coverage of Stellplatz in Austria. IIRC, @Pudsey Bear found a few places to stop overnight in Switzerland, so hopefully he will be submitting them in our Location App.

If you go to the next two england games you could do some networking when the game is in play

Our Son and his playmates have just returned from their annual European motorcycle tour, which this year took in Switzerland. Their planned route was disrupted when 2 of the Alpine Passes were closed due to landslides because of very heavy rain. So keep up to date with weather forecasts and travel updates.

Good advice. It can turn really nasty at anytime in the Alps. Ill never forget the storm in Austria in mid summer that nearly took the sun canopy off and the side of the van with it. If I hadnt been hanging onto it at the time it would have been disastrous.

We found that Austria wasn't particularly wildcamping friendly, but there were aires and stellaplatz and plenty of campsites. Just don't inconvenience landownwer or public generally and you should be ok. Campsite costs are comparable with UK off peak prices.
Germany, Netherlands and France are excellent for Aires, Stellaplatz etc.
Have a look at 'The Wandering Bird' site for info, advice, videos etc.
Happy travelling....

If you like scenery try the ‘grossglockner high mountain pass’ , make sure your brakes are in great condition, mine almost set alight on the descent.

Excellent alpine road, can get very busy. In my opinion, much better than The Stelvio. Only done it on a bike, not in the MH. Followed someone towing a caravan a few years back, we got overtaken by the SKY Tour De France cycle team!

I am Austrian. The p4night app should be good enough for your trip. Tyrol is not camper friendly. I personally avoid this part of the country. Try the eastern parts like Lower Austria ( Marchfeld and the border region to Slovakia ) or the Burgenland. Also Styria is worth to visit. Overnight parking is no problem if you do it with some care. You can also try the 'Schauaufsland' website which is like france passion.

We found several free spots in Switzerland ! They were all ok We also used some campsites which were moderately priced.
I chose to buy the vignette for Switzerland as some roads become motorways.
Austria is ok for free spots but not everywhere. We did not buy the Austrian vignette last time as we were just passing through and avoided the motorways
Never cheap but manageable !

Did you use the Schauausland app, is it worth the money, and does it have a lot of places not covered by P4N
