Strange at Stanage Edge

Just got back from a week away in M/home,
On the first night we decided to park up at Stanage Edge for the night, not to far from us, and just stayed there to get into the holiday mode. So settled down for the night, and didn't have a problem...Until 7am, when some "Park Ranger Police Man" Knocked on our door asking if we'd stayed the night. Hang on, blinds closed Mrs and the Dog snoring blissfully, and me in a pair of boxer's trying to wipe the sleep out of mi eye's, said erm "i'll let you guess"...His answer...."well you can't".
He tells me this at 7am.!!! Then drops this on mi, if you want to come back tonight, you can, but you'll have to put a tent up at the side of ya van and sleep in the tent, you can't sleep in the motorhome.!!!!!
Still can't get mi head round that one.!!!!!

interesting!!! having worked for the peak district national park for 10years and knowing the "rangers" they certainly would NOT be up at 7 a.m patroling the area!!!!

I also worked for the NT in the peak district and they to would not be out and about at the time in the morning.

having heard about would-be SAS,police,firemen etc. I would make a point of asking any ''official'' like this,for ID,and also insist on a photo of them,for MY files. I can be a nutter too!

Yes he showed me his i.d., but the thing that really give it away was that he was a 4x4 with "Ranger" on the side.!

We tried to stay at Stanage Edge a few months ago and were moved on by the Ranger at around 6pm. He said technicaly he couldn't do anything but we were not welcome to stop and although he said it was a "grey area" on moving he would be back when he started his rounds first thing the next morning and would be knocking us up to move on at 6am. We decided to move on

He told us all the parking areas you are fine in the day but Overnighting is not allowed on any of that estate land.

There are a few of the POI's up that way that we were told by the Ranger do not allow overnighting. There are no signs up to state this but the ranger does drive around.

Next time I'm there, I'll pitch a tent alongside my van for my German Shepherd to sleep in.

He'd love to be woken up by a Ranger!! :scared:

I wonder that they can't see the stupidity of there request. Did he make any attempt to "rationalise" why sleeping in a tent alongside the MH was "less harmful" than the smaller footprint & reduced damage of sleeping in just the MH?

Sometimes I wonder if pushing a situation does more harm than good. It could be easier for them to just say no camping at all than justify their current policy.

A lot of these situations are very subjective, and I'm sure most of us could put a good case forward on the spot, over a cup of tea

Many times I hear of someone who, despite the no overnighting sign, has secured themselves a nice spot after a gentle word with the 'authority'.

I know what your saying, he hasn't got any legal powers but we moved on as I didn't fancy being woke up at 6am! There's only one 6 oclock in my day and thats the one in the evening, hehe

well that's undersdtandable But I still can;t see what he was going to do when he was to wake you at 6 am - if he "technically can't do anything" [sic].


It was a fairly rhetorical question, but I did wonder if I had misunderstood something.

Warden: I have no powers to move you on but at 6 am i will come and ... err... knock on your door and ... err... wake you up and .... errr... not move you on.
