Sterlising Water Tank

I have bought a beautiful old Hymer. She is in excellent condition but I am a little concerned about the water tank. The water is clear and smells and tastes ok (not as good as beer) !) but can't help thinking that perhaps I should be trying to clean the tank. Any suggestion from you experts as to what I should use to do this and how often ? Thanks in advance.

Hi Big Ray,

I use the same tablets as they use for baby's bottles,just flush it around the system and leave for a day or two then just flush a couple of times. I have used this method on my Swift Escape from new.

We use a small amount of 'Milton' sterilising stuff, it's what they use for baby bottles etc.
Half fill the water tank, add the Milton, then drive the van for an hour or so, open all the taps to flush all the pipes and taps too, then empty the tank, refill with fresh water, and repeat.
You may find the water tastes for a couple of refills after doing this, if it does, use bottled water until the taste goes.

Thanks everyone. Use Milton in my beer carrier so will try that. It seems ok but it's just because the van is 20 years old I feel that I should be doing something. Again, thanks and happy motoring everyone.
 
Have just purchase Aqua Sol from caravan centre to treat tank. I used to use Milton sterilising powder, but, and take this with a large dose of salts, the experts indicated, as does Truma, that this will corrode the stainless steel and that it will end up like a colander in ?????? years.

Never drink the stuff undiluted ! (alcohol is the best dilutant )

Have you heard what fish and frogs do in it ?

i only drink water if its "brown" i.e. tea, beer, whisky, coffee"" used to work for a water authority and ive seen what they put in it to make it "drinkable"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Milton and stuff like bleach shouldn't be used in the water system, as has been said it can attack the stainless tank in the boiler but it can also react with some of the hose /pipes used in the system and bleach will also make plastic such as that used for sinks and toilets brittle and could discolour it, I have always used puriclens in the past but maybe the best option is a equal mixed solution of white vinegar and water this will also help descale the boiler. As we are fulltimers we have a constantly replenished supply of water so hardly have to bother now but I still use the vinegar now and then as I have seen what constant use of the boiler creates in limescale on the element
 
I've used Puriclean in the past, now I have some baby bottle sterilising tabs. I only do it when I first get a new van, then once a year. Put in in, draw through to the taps, drive it round a bit to slosh it about and then empty it and re-fill a couple of times before using.

I've read all the scary stories about it affecting the components of the system but I don't think a dose once a year that's soon washed out will harm it that much.
 
Hi I use a little Hypochlorite bleach which farmers use to sterilise their milking machines only a little needed follow instruction on the can re dose to use. There's a lot of stainless steel in milking machines and tanks so should be safe. Cost about £10 for 20ltrs from local farmers merchants.also at this price you can wash up paths and walls out side.
Never use Household Bleach as it sticks to internal pipes and tank walls as its intended for killing germs for a long time so very difficult to flush out
 
I've never bothered. I've always had water purifier fitted. Used tank cleaner in the grey tank though.
 
My husband always complains he can taste the bleach even after a couple of flushes. I buy a 1kg box of bicarbonate of soda from chemist, its pennies there and use a cup full dissolved in hot water then poured into the tank of rinsing water after the bleach is out and leave for the rest of the day before pumping through the system. Gets rid of all bad taste

Flushing the tank out need not involve taps or water heaters. only drain the tank itself then 1/2 fill it with whatever agent you desire to sterilise it. swill it about, drain the tank and rinse several times, sorted.After that do whatever with the taps and heaters but the op was about the tank only.

Here's another endorsement of household bleach, I just keep separate containers of tapwater for tea etc.

Ha Ha yes you are correct, was posting in a hurry, that is the mix I use in the hot water system to descale the boiler so only need a gallon of vinegar about £4 made up to two gallon draw through hot tap only just to fill the boiler, for general stuff a lot lot weaker solution would work

This is my method. In fact I've just this minute finished doing mine. One half cup of ordinary household bleach, no problem.
