Today highlighted that I really need to get a spare key for the car. After searching the house for an hour looking for my car keys i went back into the kitchen only to see them sitting next to the kettle … DOH !!😆

I phoned a local company regarding the spare and they have quoted £198 😱😱… does that sound about right ?

We had one for our Berlingo done by our local key cutter/ cobbler chap. He does automotive keys too. It was a manual one but is fine for a spare. Might be worth wandering into a local place ( not Timpsons though, tried them). Think it was £30 max.

Thanks will shop around … that’ll teach me not to drop our old original down the drain

It will depend on what car it is for, we use a local auto locksmith for the ambulances and our cars and he charges between £90 and £120

We've had them done at timpsons...use one in a supermarket car park rather than a high street shop so you can park close by.

@Herbenny
It depends on the type of key and what you want, a simple blade that can operate the door lock can be cut relatively cheaply at places like timpsons but it may not be able to start the engine.

Most keys also have a built in immobiliser chip which has to be coded to the car, so a blade with immobiliser chip is usually the cheapest workable option.

The most expensive is the full blown replacement fob with buttons etc, that can operate exactly as the original key. However not all auto lock smiths can fully code every vehicle so you may have to settle for chip and blade only

Always worth getting a quote from the vehicle manufacturer as well.

We have had a full blown bellss and whistles key done for the MH and had it done close to Newcastle. Sat and waited for it and it took some two hours or so. They need access to the vehicle too.

If you think that getting a key copied is expensive, wait until you find the price of getting one when you don't have one to copy!
Go to a Timpsons and see if they can do one for you, or ask your local secondhand car dealer who they use.

We got a second motorhome key for our Bailey 6 years ago, the main key with all the electrickery coding in it. It cost a lot less from a mobile locksmith.
Now we have a new van I tried to get one. 2024 Fiat Ducato, they've coded it in some way that anyone other than a main Fiat dealer can't copy it.
I'm hoping this will change in time.

Local mobile auto locksmith charged £140 for an all singing all dancing 2nd remote key for our Citroen car. It was a generic casing. £180 (I think) for a Citroen branded casing.

Then 6 weeks later we found the lost set in "never used" coat pocket. DOH 😣
