Here’s where we went on our recent visit to Spain and Portugal. Our focus was on National Parks. Many great overnight spots but the highlights were –
• Fuente De - cable car
• Las Medulas – Roman gold mine ruins and ancient chestnut trees
• Os Banos – hot springs and Roman villa
• Barril de Alva – great place to chill, reminded me of an Australian bush camp
• Toledo – we were there when they were having a mini Roman festival
• Segovia – we followed the aqueduct from where it starts into the city -
• Arguedas - rock houses in cliff above aire and Bardenas Reales NP, 34 km circular gravel road through desert landscape
In Avila we celebrated our 365th night in the van.
• Spain - Santillana Del Mar - 43.38913 - -4.10638 - - CU - 4€/ 24hrs. Old sign at entrance has tent crossed out symbol with Autocaravanas underneath, we were the only ones there -
• Spain - Fuente De - 43.14462 - -4.81318 - - CR - Sign at entrance says no campervans after sunset. National Park booth not manned until Saturday morning. 3 other vans first night, on our own second night. - Cable car 17€ return, 900m height gain. 18degC at bottom, 7 at top
• Spain - Posada de Valdeon - 43.15208 - -4.91759 - - AC - "10 € night payable at the Town Hall during week, collected at 10am weekends, we left early so did not pay. AC next to sports hall with toilets & showers - cold water only. Overnight for Cain de Valdeon for Ruta del Cares george walk - 12km to Poncebos. We turned back after 6.6 so 13.2 in total in 5 hours. Parked 43.21332 - 4.90474
• Spain - Cangas de Onís - 43.35253 - -5.12537 - - AF - Aire in corner of large CP - Roman bridge, river walks. Sunday market so some shops are closed on Monday
• Spain - Ponferrada - 42.54281 - -6.58657 - - AF - Service point. Area marked out for trucks but none there. - Templar Castle, Radio Museum, Jail Museum - free on Wed
• Spain - Las Medulas - 42.46153 - -6.76739 - - CR - - Roman gold mining remains. 4km linear walk past three small lakes to Mirador de Chao de Masseiros viewpoint. 4km walk to La Cuevona and La Encantada cave like excavations through centuries old chestnut trees. One TIC near CP, another one in the village.

• Spain - Os Banos - 41.97948 - -7.98242 - - CR - CP for As Leirinas Roman thermal springs pools, narrow and steep approach from main road - Impressive remains of Roman fort a short walk south
• Portugal - Castelo de Bragança - 41.80405 - -6.74597 - - AF - Tiered aire so although it is large it feels spacious with good views. - Castle, walls, river board walk
• Portugal - Torre de Moncorvo - 41.18094 - -7.04170 - - AF - Some way out of the town, not very flat. Free showers. - Medieval town
• Portugal - Barril de Alva - 40.28604 - -7.96228 - - AF - Large bush camp style area, very relaxing - River walks, not a lot in the village.
• Spain - Vila Velha De Rodao - 39.65123 - -7.67189 - - AF - -
• Spain - Los Barruecos NP - 39.41937 - -6.49973 - - CR - CP near lake and storks nesting on rock outcrops - Interpretation centre not open Monday.
• Spain - Cáceres - 39.48015 - -6.36864 - - AF - - Historic town, Cáceres museum, free, with Hispano-Arab cistern
• Spain - Monfrague NP - 39.83702 - -5.98928 - - CR - All CPs in Villarreal de San Carlos have signs limiting campervan parking to 2 hours overnight. Parked at La Malavuelta viewpoint, there are others along the road - River views, vultures riding the thermals.
• Spain - Oropesa - 39.92246 - -5.16611 - - AF - Opposite HGV weighbridge. - Castle and large church
• Spain - Toledo - 39.86507 - -4.01876 - - CU - Parking in far corner of CP -
• Spain - Avila - 40.66198 - -4.70544 - - CU - -
• Spain - Segovia - 40.94077 - -4.10783 - - AF - Next to bull ring. Close to start of aqueduct which can be followed into the city -
• Spain - El Burgo de Osma - 41.58680 - -3.07297 - - CU - Area marked for bus parking, but plenty of room. Water tap. - Colonnaded shops selling local produce
• Spain - Enciso - 42.14807 - -2.27377 - - CU - Large car relative to size of village. It is for the theme park. Dam being built above the CP. - Dinosaur theme park.
• Spain - Arguedas - 42.17381 - -1.59176 - - AF - - Rock houses in cliff above aire, occupied until 60 years ago. Bardenas Reales NP, 34 km circular gravel road through desert landscape
• Spain - Ayegui - 42.65046 - -2.04410 - - CP - Parking area outside Bodegas Irache wine museum, with wine tap for pilgrims behind, and Monasterio de Sant Maria la Real de Irache. Not an obvious overnight spot so one to arrive lare and leave early. Official aire, next to sports centre, now 4€ including services - pretty sterile looking. -
